CHAPEL HILL – Juniors Kennedy Meeks and Nate Britt scored 14 points apiece to lead six Tar Heels in double figures as the top-ranked University of North Carolina men’s basketball team rolled to a 99-49 exhibition win over Guilford College Friday evening at the Smith Center.

The Tar Heels played without starters Marcus Paige and Justin Jackson. Paige broke his right hand on Tuesday and is out 3-4 weeks; Jackson was not feeling well after practice last evening and was held out as a precaution. He is expected to return to practice on Monday.

Carolina shot 61.8 percent from the floor (42-68) and had 33 assists on 42 field goals. Four Tar Heels handed out five or more assists, led by Britt who had nine and Joel Berry II with seven.

Meeks added five blocked shots to go along with his 14 points. Berry II, Isaiah Hicks and freshman Kenny Williams each scored 12 and Theo Pinson added 10. Britt, Berry II, Pinson and Williams combined for 26 assists and seven turnovers.

Zachary Houston was the lone Quaker in double figures with 14 points and added a team-high six assists. Guilford shot 33.3 percent from the floor for the game, including 28.6 percent in the second half.

Carolina led 52-24 at halftime and out-rebounded the Quakers, 47-25.

The Tar Heels open the regular season on November 13 against Temple in the Veterans Day Classic in Annapolis, Md.

Note: Senior guard Justin Coleman also was not available for the Tar Heels tonight and will not be playing for an undetermined period of time.

“Justin is taking an indefinite leave from participating in basketball activities so that he may deal with a personal issue,” says head coach Roy Williams. “We wish Justin the best, will of course assist him in any way we can and hope he is able to rejoin our team as soon as possible."

Coleman played two seasons on the Tar Heels’ junior varsity team before earning a spot on the varsity prior to last season. He played in 10 games as a junior. This past summer, Williams put Coleman on scholarship for his senior season. The Raleigh native attended Broughton High School.
