So how does this work?

So we hired a GM and a front office to support nil and recruiting. Fantastic move! Now Hubert can focus on running the team, x's and O's, team chemistry, etc...

Has there been any real conversation about how players in the portal and in high school will be identified as potential targets? Does Hubert provide Tanner a list or does Tanner do homework on players provide a catalog to Hubert?

The one thing we know about next year is that we will need at least one, but probably two, bigs. Does Hubert tell Tanner what types of bigs he wants, I have to imagine Hubert has the final right of refusal, as, in the end, it is his team and he is our head coach.

Anyone know how this works at other schools who have a couple years Head start on us?

As a pro sports fan NBA, NFL, etc. the coach has a "want" type, the GM has a spending limit. They then see who is available, recruiting, portal and the coach tries to pitch their guys worth. Ideal to have the GM , bring in "his guy".

Coach recruits style/fit, still his call to woo talent, GM gives limits to pay. They have to be on the same wave length. I do not think the UNC GM has the hiring/firing power, so gotta think this is a fit for Hubert's and the schools vision.

I really hope Tanner, as advertised, can re-establish our foreign player pipeline. There are a LOT of really good players out there
And the over seas bigs are ALL 5 out guys though, that is what they teach. If they are on the same wave length, some traditional UNC fans may not be happy.

Dang G,

Beat me to it! We have fans who posted the day after a Natty talking about how we would suck the next year since peeps were leaving, lol!

I don't really like the way college ball is changing even though I fully support the idea of NIL. I hate the portal and direct pay for play aspects since they are so unregulated. I love that players are getting compensation for their contributions to the U though.

UNC has historically been slow to change largely since "you don't fix what ain't broke" but we are adapting to the current game and I expect this GM will help us catch up to those who have been paying their players for decades!

Great hire and I suspect that every U wants the GM & Coach to be on the same page and for them to communicate a great deal to ensure we get the type of players who fit our culture, talent/position needs, and budget!

Best I can piece together but don't hold me to this as being exact. Hubert huddles with Tanner and they discuss position player types they agree on as need (for both portal and HS recruiting). Hubert likely has a short list of guys he think would fit that, could be considered the prototype that Hubert is looking for. Tanner then passes that info on to his recruiting team, they assemble any and all film they can get on the guys that Hubert may like but as well on other guys that may as well fit that prototype that Hubert wants. That means other guys that Hubert does not know as much about get consideration as well. At that point a list of players, including those Hubert already liked and all their tape is given to Tanner.

At that point Tanner and Hubert huddle up together, breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of that list, that likely pares the list down a bit. Let's say we need to bring in 3 guys, that list is likely to have 5-6 or more for each type of player that should fit our need. Tanner takes that short list and starts making contact, taking to the players agent, talking to coaches, talking to local sports gurus that may have insite on a player. He would be looking for both what the level of interest is from the kid toward UNC and you need multiple sources for that information to be as accurate as it needs to be, can't just trust the kid or his parents because they will play you. The other real key that Tanner has to get is what is the kid expecting $$$ wise, does he already have any $$$ offers we may have to beat. He then works those numbers against the money available to see if we are in the ball park for both interest and $$$.

That information in hand Tanner huddles back with Hubert with a list of 3-5 guys for each need position, Hubert gets his assistant coaches out making face time with those kids, works the phones to talk to the kids and their parents and coaches, he visits to watch a game the kid plays and works from there to set up his in home visit as well as the kids visit to the school already knowing the kid has interest in UNC and we are there with the cash so that on the kids UNC visit all Hubert has to worry about is selling the kid on playing for UNC, a thing Hubert is especially good at, when it is time to talk $$$ Hubert tuns him over to Tanner to close the $$$ part of the deal. I think that is your basic outline, I think in time it expands to international players as well as American players.

Speaking for just myself, I have no problem at all with a 5 man that pops out for treys occasionally, I VERY MUCH WANT Jalen to do just that!!! What I DO NOT WANT is a 5 man that camps out behind the 3pt arch, like Pete Nance did. Example, what I want to see from Jalen, go set that high screen for Cadeau but rather than always rolling down, pop out for the trey,k if it doesn't come back to you then cut down the lane, MOVE, don't camp out! Play the 2 man game to either pop out or roll for the opps, that is a HUGE weapon, we should be using today and for reason don't 99% of the time. That is those Euro big men's bread and butter and it is because it works! Cadeau has nice stretches where he runs those 2 man games to perfection, I want MORE of that.
