"Damn I miss Duane Allman, I wish he was still around..."

If you never saw the ABB you really missed something. RIP, Butch.
I'm envious of people who were able to see the original lineups of great bands like them. People who saw The Stones with Brian Jones, or the original Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I saw The Allman Brothers in 1993, for the first time. That was a good show! But, I can only imagine what it would have been like 23 years before that.

I've seen ABB probably 7/8 times but only once with Duane. I went with my uncles and I was only like 12. All I really remember about him that night is the lamb chops and that screaming guitar.

I saw Skynryd six times before the crash. I've never been back to another show. Stevie Gaines was on board the last time I saw them and IMO they were better than ever that night. Just tight, you know? Hell, RVZ was actually moving a little, lol. They played a festival at Georgia Southern and there was some hellacious MDA around Statesboro at that time. We wondered if he'd gotten wired up because he was just never that animated when we'd seen them before. That had to be like April/May of '77...a few months later they went down. Damn I hate even thinking about this.

I would never even think about seeing Skynyrd after that crash. I'm not a huge Skynyrd fan, but I have a real appreciation for the original guys, the story, their whole rise to fame, etc.. They're "southern", so I guess I just have sort of a common thread vibe.

I think it was back in the 90's, Ed King was back with them, if I recall correctly. And, a buddy of mine was trying to get me to go see them because he was there. But, I dunno... I liked Allen Collins a lot, too. And, they're like their own tribute band.

Butch Trucks RIP

Caught the band in '73 for a concert at the Capital Centre, IIRC, Elvin Bishop opened that night followed by The Marshall Tucker Band before ABB put up one awesome set.
One of the best ever concerts IMO.

The original band was made up of guys my friends and I could so easily identify with at that time. They were all from a place just 75 miles away and everyone in SoGa, at least everyone I knew, just felt a kinship with that band. They were just like us...loud, long haired and rebellious. They came through Vidalia playing the Southern bar circuit before signing with MCA. We watched them go from nobody to a regional favorite and finally to stars. When I think back on my teens Skynyrd is the background music in my head. We worshipped those guys.

http://blogs.lib.unc.edu/uarms/index.php/2011/06/jubilee-at-unc/

At one time, there was an annual event at UNC called Jubilee. The last one occurred during the spring of 1971 and, it happens, a band that was not widely known at the time performed. That band was The Allman Brothers. I was a freshman at UNC at the time, and, much to my regret, I chose to go home for the weekend instead of attend. (I had to see a girl.) Anyway, when I came back Sunday night, the talk of the festival was The Allman Brothers. A couple of months later they were the hottest band in the country. I found this article about Jubilee and provided a link for anyone interested. I always loved the Allman boys and will always be sorry I missed them at this event.

Love Me some ABB. Live version of Blue Sky from An Evening With The Allman Brothers Band is probably my personal most played track over my lifetime. I always seem to select that song when Im in the car or hanging out by the pool.
On a side note, I've really started getting into Derek Trucks Band and Tedeschi Trucks Band. Live versions of Midnight in Harlem..wow...unbelievable slide guitar. Sweet Inspiration is another favorite.
