Sorry guys... tied up in meetings all day and have just a few minutes before I teach a marathon night class, so here goes.
Now... BIG DISCLAIMER. This one shocked not only me but my AAU coach friend who was actually there to hear this first hand... esp. with certain sites putting this player 90% going elsewhere.

Couple of weekends ago at an AAU event my friend was among a group of coaches who were sitting in the stands with 2 or 3 conversations going on. Among those in the group was Boo Williams (yes, that Boo Williams). There was much chatter about who was going where, and Boo was apparently holding court. When the subject of Dennis Smith was brought up around him, Boo tersely said, "Smith's going to North Carolina."
My friend said this was one of those old E.F.Hutton commercial moments, where everyone in earshot stopped and craned their necks. After a pause one of the coaches responded, "you mean North Carolina State, right?"

(now picture my buddy imitating Boo, who has a bit of a stutter, with his chin stuck out and arms folded)

Boo says assertively, "N-No. N-North Car-o-lin-a. Smith is a Roy guy." And apparently this was said with a tone of annoyance, which would figure since Boo is no big friend of UNC.

Now again, guys. The ONLY thing I can assure you of is that this conversation absolutely happened. Now, as to whether Boo was just blowing smoke?... or knew the truth to blow smoke about? You know as much as I do. I do know that he sounded serious enough that it stunned the folks present. It sure as hell shocked my buddy, and he was still pretty incredulous when he told me last night (first time I've seen him in three weeks).

So please heed the disclaimer. Don't be dogging me 3 months from now if Smith goes elsewhere. Hell, I'll believe he's coming to UNC when I see it myself... same with my buddy, who is a UNC fan BTW. But............

Just relaying something I thought you guys would have a little interest in....

Well there it is and like you say I will believe it when I see it

Thanks for passing that along

gary, I have actually heard the same thing, not from boo. I know most everyone has him pinned in for the woofies and yes he has listened and truth is hard for me to believe we lead for him but I do strongly believe we are right there with any leader and if we do trail we don't by such a margin that can not be made up on a visit and in home. Bam & Jr are tight...just sayin...

FYI, Roy is pitching Jr playing beside Joel and not just be limited to being a pg, NOT AN UNATTRACTIVE PITCH BY THE WAY. :)

Seems as if for the last couple of years or so that we get kids who've gotten hurt before reaching our campus .. Sorry for the kid's injury but i hope this one works in our favor..especially if he returns to old form!!

True, and remember, Giles is running around on a surgically repaired knee and he's doing OK with it.

Hey, it could be a good pitch: Team rehab.

As you say, half the roster has been in the injury ward already: Theo, Joel B, Kennedy, Joel J, Marcus.
Smith Jnr would fit in just fine, they all could compare scars.

Seriously though, hoping this is good mail Gary, it'd be a shot in the arm for the program.

Thanks Gary, the whole board needed a good rumor, regardless of whether it transpires or not. I would love to land this young man, but if we don't, I still wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Now that's more like it! I love the optimism whether it happens or not.
Just to hear a good rumor is a change. Love me some Roy! Pull them both in and let's go to the FF two years in a row! (hyperbole?)

He isn't going to come to sit behind Berry.

I doubt seriously if Dennis Smith is worried about playing behind Berry . . . . LOL

Smith would eat Berry for lunch, spit out the bones, and wouldn't miss a beat.

Good news! .......................................... crystal ball says 95% moou.

I wouldn't think this is true before his injury.

And, remember, Britt was considered far and away the best PG in his class til his injury.

You have let other people make you dislike Berry. It's unfortunate.

Yeah Dave... I had heard it too but it wasn't substantive enough to post at that point... plus I knew it would generate some of the sophomoric jackassery such as predictably appeared elsewhere ITT. I've been sitting on some info about another '16 kid for that very reason.
Sad, right?
Anyway, there was some additional stuff from the conversation I referenced in the OP that I didn't have time to post this afternoon that backs up what you just said.

Like Dsouthr said, Roy is pitching to play with Berry. Also, you are the opposite to Billy. You have a weird love for Berry just because some say he isn't that good.

I'm guessing it's Bam as the other 16 recruit you have info about? Thanks for sharing the info you have. Being in Georgia, what have you heard on Simmons?

Not bam.
As for Simmons that one has been all over the place... could shake out soon I'm thinking.

A harsh statement, to say the least. After reading some of your posts on OOTB, I was dumbfounded. I have always thought of you as a pretty reasonable guy. You sound as angry as your avatar looks.

It may be a harsh statement, but, I feel its accurate.

As far as OOTB goes, I am who I are . . and yes, I have been angry ever since my goldfish died . .

Remember this is the same Boo Williams that had us sold that his nephew Troy Williams was a lock for us. And we all know how that one turned out for us. This is nothing but fodder for Boo, he loves toying with us. The only way DS even thinks about us is if for some reason K and Cal pulls their offers, which ain't happening. And NC State ain't happening either. We will get Woods out of the deal, though.

Not true, 1310. I like Joel Berry a lot . . what is different between myself and others on this board is that I am a Nate Britt fan.

Boo Williams also said Kenny Williams was lock for Virginia..

Boo Williams never sold us his nephew!!..definitely didn't lock us into him either...boo has provided us several quality recruits over the years..Roy has always had a good relationship with him..unless something dramatic has happened over the last couple of years that I don't know about..then I don't think much has changed!!Troy chose his own path once he started feeling a little love from UK and word got out through a slip up quote from his uncle about him possibly"playing the 4 spot by the time he got to Carolina"..neither happened and crean scooped him up!!..the rest is history.

Billy, I am also a big Britt fan and the team can always use a point guard in the mode of Jimmy Black who does not ever looks for individual praise but sacrifices that to run the team and get everybody involved.

Berry has all kinds of talent and should be the starter but again instead of comparing the two we should be very happy that UNC has backup in case either Berry or Paige get hurt or get into foul trouble.

And all that Jimmy Black did was run the show that had a couple of ballplayers you just might have heard of named: Worthy, Perkins and Jordan. Yep a team oriented guard that year who hardly ever looked to shoot did pretty good for himself and his team

I'll tell u Billy I always root for the underdog regardless if they are a starter or a reserve because they ALL wear North Carolina on the front of their jerseys.

Thanks Gary for the info on both these recruits, no matter how this turns out I certainly feel a lot better now. If you decide to let us in on the other '16 recruit you talked about that would be much appreciated also!

He did indeed, although from what I understand he actually believed that, because of --- how can I put this? --- a combination of wanting to believe it, and drinking heavily from the poison kool-aid "Carolina won't get anybody good with the NCAA hammer coming" meme that has been so pervasive in AAU circles (BTW: I may have more on that particular subject after I talk with my buddy this weekend).

Again, I repeat my full disclaimer that Boo can blow smoke with the best of 'em, and may well be in this case.
That being said, the one thing that would most lead me to think his Smith pronouncement could be true is that (unlike his K. Williams statement) he came across as genuinely irritated by this one...

Bottom line, I'm not counting on anything... just gonna hope with the rest of ya.
