Not sure if this is embedded in one of the other threads somewhere but just heard this one -- easily ranks as one of the best covers I've ever heard.

Punch Brothers cover the Cars.

That is freaking awesome. Punch Brothers are also big Radiohead fans and cover a number of their songs. One of my favorites is Kid A, because it's just a weird bit of electronica in its original form but they replicate it perfectly entirely on string instruments.

Incidentally, one of the public radio stations here in town uses this from time to time as their filler music while waiting for the national news broadcast to start at the top of the hour.

I doubt anyone has ever heard the original song (I hadn't either) but I love how the acoustic cover lays it bare and exposes how it's really a beautiful melody masquerading behind a punk façade.

Bro, you don't know The Thermals? I legitimately thought you liked them. But you're wrong lol, I've heard the original. The Thermals write some deceptively deep lyrics to go with their upbeat sound.

And probably the greatest cover of all time:

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Feat. the legends Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs and (I think)Vassar Clements, plus others -- "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" (The Carter Family)

So many songs are covers and most people don't even know it. For example, the song that Zeppelin made popular, Dazed and Confused, was a cover originally written and sung by Jake Holmes and then the Yardbirds. But everyone associates the song with Zeppelin. And then there are songs that have been covered so many times that you don't even know who actually wrote and recorded it first - e.g.: House of The Rising Sun, Man of Constant Sorrow, My Way, etc.

This conversation starts with Johnny Cash's last album - American IV - The Man Comes Around. There are 3 for nomination of greatest covers from that album alone.

Original - Depeche Mode (and Marilyn Manson does a great rendition as well)

Original - U2 (and it was a great song when they did it)

And then of course, there's this. Original - Nine Inch Nails

And more:

Original - Public Enemy (and Chuck still raps but music is provided by Anthrax. This version is so badass).

Original - Paul Anka (although Sid's version is my favorite, I love Frank's and Elvis' rendition).

Original - Stevie Wonder

Listened to that "Jolene" cover. I love me some Jack White but I gotta say that cover was lousy. Now maybe it's because I hate when the opposite gender sings a cover of a part that's meant for the other sex to sing. But also, Parton's vocals are pretty haunting in the original and really drive that song. When the instrumentals in the cover kick in, it's better, but I just wasn't feeling it.

Still love the White Stripes though.

ETA: Changing my rating from "lousy" to "average."

Even More (NSFW list)

Original - Dr. Dre

Original - Eazy-E (this is probably one of the greatest music videos of all time)

Original - Snoop Dogg

Original - Bob Dylan

Cover - The Turtles

Cover - Johnny Cash & June Carter

Cover - Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon

I like this cover of "Jolene" better........I'm surprised at how excellent this is. It's almost like Miley was raised by a daddy in the country music biz or something. But seriously, put aside your opinions of Miley Cyrus and listen to this. It's great.

Cover - Joe Cocker

Nice. But his more famous Beatles cover hasn't even been mentioned yet and it is damn near the top of any list of great covers. His performance at Woodstock is amazing.

"It Ain't Me Babe" is possibly my favorite Dylan song, right up there with "When The Ship Comes in"

As a Dylan head, I won't say that "It Ain't Me, Babe" is one of my least favorites, but it's towards the bottom of Dylan songs for me. "When The Ship Comes In" is a good one though.

Uh, you better scroll up the thread there GSD.

Edited: Could be my mistake in that your were referring to "A little help From My Friends" rather than "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window"

This song has an odd progression. It was originally written by Gordon Lightfoot in 1964. Ian & Sylvia were the first to record and release it in 1965, then Peter Paul and Mary did later that year. Lightfoot didn't release his version until 1966.

One last folk music reference and I'll quit:

Judy Collins and Pete Seeger

The Byrds

Here are a couple of covers by acoustic guitar instrumentalists I subscribe to on You Tube

Tommy Emmanuel is simply amazing!
