South's Hold on the Sport as Strong as Ever

Dellenger notes that Ohio St is the one outlier in that 18 year period, but he does not note that OH is right across the Ohio River from Southern state KY. Nor that Ohio's last huge gain in population came from massive numbers of people from Southern states moving there to get factory jobs at a time when tariffs on goods manufactured in the South either were still in place or else just recently ended, which had kept the numbers of factories in the South way down.

Ohio, a very populous state, is the only northern state that has anything comparable to Texas (or GA or FL or AL, etc.). So it should be surprise that Ohio State is only school from outside the South in this long stretch to win there National Championship, nor that the only school not from a P5 to make the Playoffs is the #2 state school and #2 football program in OH: Cincinnati.

Dellenger notes that CFB is not the NFL< in which drafts are in reverse order of record, which helps everyone compete (unless they make stupid draft picks and trades). But: “It’s almost unfair,” says former Florida coach Steve Spurrier, whose 1996 Gators are the last first-time national champion. “At Alabama, it’s like being in the NFL, winning the Super Bowl and every year getting the first 10 picks in the first round.”

It’s a cycle, industry experts say, and it’s not exclusive to Alabama: a big brand recruits well, wins a title, becomes an even bigger brand, recruits even better, wins more titles."

So can anybody who is not already able to recruit BIUG because of huge stadiums and a whole of Top 10 teams in recent years? "And then there’s TCU, a small private college that’s on a magical ride to the title game. The Horned Frogs defy recruiting projections of success. For instance, over the last four years, they have signed one five-star rated prospect. Georgia has signed 18."

Thinly way to win enough to become one of the perennial top recruiters is to have a staff that can win Big without as much talent as the Bamas, UGAs, Ohio States, LSUs, Texases, etc.
