I think this is okay to post as this Blog is free for me on Facebook...If not Mods you can take it down...

Anyway a good read...

Also I hope the kid from Reidsville gets a shot in the slot WR spot... He was a Walk On player but comes from 1 of the best programs in NC HighSchool football and they love to throw it...

Austyn Chestnut...might be a name to watch...

Anyway just a little something...

Posting here rather than start another thread

I was shocked to hear kJ sails was transferring and that cj cotham was retiring. Thought sails was a lock for being a starter. Best of luck to both for different reasons.

I understand Cotham's decision, but Sails entering the transfer portal makes no sense - unless he just does not want to play for someone on the new staff.

In twitter pics and vids, etc it looked like Greg Ross was starting instead of Sails. So maybe Sails didn't want to be second-string behind Rene/Ross. Total speculation on my part, cuz the lineups in the pics/vids could be random. Greg Ross looked bad at times last yr, but I think he is faster than Sails. And if we're corner-blitzing in the new scheme then that speed gives him an added bump - also speculating.

If he is the type who demands to start and it looks like he will not, then that would explain his leaving. And such a person staying could cause team dissension with a bad attitude.

Why? He is not a guy who can be All-ACC, but he is decent compared our other DBs. He would have played.
I would guess attitude. Coaches usually don't like attitude from players who don't have the skill to match. This is just all speculation on my part. It might just be a case of him not liking the coaches.

I think teammates really like KJ, and I never got any negative vibes from Fed or any other coach regarding him.

He's a father, so he's probably forced into more maturity than typical college players. Plus he's had a different secondary coach every yr, and two different DC's. So he's used to having to gel with different coaches. He was great in interviews... I'm not there, but he seems like a good guy more than a bad apple who would be pushed out despite being talented.

demanding to start is one thing, but desiring to start when you know others are just out-playing you is a different thing. Again, I have no clue what happened, but if you're hoping to go pro and you think you are probably going to be second-string then it makes sense to transfer elsewhere for PT. Heck, same is true for people that don't think they'll make it professionally but just wanna play.

When I said attitude I was referring to him acting like he just made an interception to win the super bowl after every play. He was a decent DB, but the ridiculous celebrations were unwarranted 99% of the time.

i hesitate to speculate why a guy is transferring. there are all kinds of possible reasons and circumstances... could be things are ok but someone convinced him the grass is greener elsewhere.

One thing that Spring is showing beyond any doubt is that our D is going to be very aggressive, every game, all game. This is will be something of the antithesis of the Withers' Prevent, which any time we had a lead in the 4th quarter, the D, which already was played somewhat tamely, was called off, hoping to slow down any comeback enough so that the clock would run out.

Offhand, I would guess that under Withers as DC and then HC (4 years), UNC lost as many games after having a 4th quarter lead as we did in the entire Brown and Crum years combined.

The Bateman D is going to attack, with players always shifting, from the first series until the final play.

Our offense practicing against our D should then become tougher in blocking, smarter on the feet, quicker acting under pressure. Better able to adjust on the fly.

When those 2 come together, the team will be highly explosive, able to make game changing plays on both sides of the ball from the opening series until the last.

All HC hires are a crap shoot to some degree. It is always about the right time and place for the right person, and that can be known for certainty only after it has been done for a few years (usually, perhaps almost all the time, 3 years will tell the long term).

That said, it is always best when hiring as your new HC a Coordinator rather than someone with HC experience that the Coordinator be an original, an innovator, than a coach who keeps something developed by a previous coordinator running smoothly.

The guy who invents and then perfects something is better to have to step up than the guy who inherited another's invention/development and kept i running smoothly.

Bateman is an original, an innovator. He could be the DC version of what Mike Leach was as OC at UK and OU. If he is even close to that level, then he would be an immense loss to the program should be hired away, a worse loss than any we've had before with an assistant coach leaving.

It also means that Bateman may well be the ideal successor to Mack. If UK had made Leach HC, there is no telling what its football would have accomplished over the past 20 years.

Corey Bell moved to WR...
And supposedly doing very well - as in, he could see major action come fall as a pass receiver.

I love that the staff is looking at guys and considering moving them to new positions, including on the other side of the ball. Sometimes new eyes spot gems that have been overlooked.

Brant Lawless is impressing people with his play.

I am not at all surprised. At his ability or by his work ethic.

If our DL stays healthy, it might prove a force this year. Tar Heel football always seems better when we have a D Front 7 that makes foes pay for every TD, every 1st down.

Amen. I'm crossing my fingers that we can sign Desmond Evans and Trenton Simpson from the '20 class. Talent is on the way for the defense.

I'm also excited to see some of those 4-5 receiver sets. The staff is worried that we don't have enough depth at WR, ergo the position change for Cory Bell. And the staff is trying to find ways to match the current personnel to the new schemes, all across the board. Not an easy task.
