Fever pitch fan intensity should give both teams a boost by Thursday night. Spurrier, 3-0 against North Carolina while at Duke and 2-0 while at South Carolina, obviously likes this series.
The Tar Heels hold a 34-18-4 edge in a series that began in 1903, a half-century before both schools joined the ACC.
“I think the fans like a game against somebody close by,” Spurrier said. “Some of these conferences have added teams all over the place, which to me doesn’t make sense. West Virginia playing in the Big 12, I don’t know how that makes sense, but that’s the way they’re doing it. But (North Carolina) is right close by to us and I think the fans see each other a lot during the course of the year, just like we see Georgia fans, Clemson and so forth.”
Though South Carolina’s non-conference schedule is set for 2016 (Clemson, East Carolina, Massachusetts and Western Carolina), athletic director Ray Tanner said Sunday there have been conversations about more Gamecocks-Tar Heel games “going forward.”
The “real Carolina” football program on Thursday night can earn bragging rights that last a while, and go a long way in setting a tone for a critical season.
