• North Carolina finished the season 8-5 overall following a 25-23 loss to No. 16 Stanford in the 2016 Hyundai Sun Bowl. Despite the loss, Carolina won 19 games over the last two seasons, the most since winning 21 in 1996 (10) and 1997 (11).
• The Tar Heels fell to 14-19 all-time in bowl games.
• Stanford now leads the series with the Tar Heels, 2-1. The Sun Bowl was the first game between the schools at a neutral site.
• Carolina held Stanford to 283 total yards of offense, the second-lowest total by an opponent this season (Virginia had 253).
• Junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky completed 23 of 39 pass attempts for 280 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Trubisky set UNC single-season records for touchdown passes (30) and total offense (4,056 yards) in today’s game. Trubisky finished the season with just six interceptions, but all six came in UNC losses.
• Trubisky took sole possession of the UNC single-season touchdown passing record with his 29th scoring pass in the first quarter. He entered the game tied with Bryn Renner (2012) with 28. Trubisky found Ryan Switzer on a 19-yard strike for the game’s first score. Late in the fourth quarter, he threw his 30th touchdown pass of the season with a 2-yard completion to Bug Howard.
• Trubisky set the UNC single-season record for total offense with 4,056 yards, breaking the previous mark of 4,020 set by Marquise Williams in 2015. Trubisky and Williams are the only two players in UNC history with more than 4,000 total yards of offense in a season. Only 13 players in ACC history have gained 4,000-or-more yards in a season.
• Senior wide receiver Ryan Switzer set the school record for career receiving yards with 2,907. He broke the record on his first reception of the day, a 19-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Trubisky in the first quarter to give UNC a 7-0 lead. He finished the game with five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
• Switzer finished the season with a UNC single-season record 96 catches for 1,112 yards. The 1,112 yards are the third-best single-season total at UNC. Switzer finished his career with 244 receptions for 2,907 yards (both UNC career records). His 19 career touchdown receptions ranks tied for fourth at UNC.
• Senior place-kicker Nick Weiler made one of two field goal attempts and two extra points to finish with five points. He finished his career third on the UNC career scoring chart with 273 points.
• Freshman running back Jordon Brown scored his first career touchdown on 5-yard run in the third quarter to tie the game at 16. Weiler’s point after gave UNC a 17-16 lead.
• Senior tailback T.J. Logan gained 72 yards on a career-high 19 carries. His previous high for carries was 18 vs. Pitt in 2014 and at Duke in 2014. On Carolina’s go-ahead scoring drive in the third quarter, Logan carried five straight times for 29 yards to move the Tar Heels into the red zone.
• Logan finished his career with 4,926 all-purpose yards, which ranks fourth in UNC history.
• North Carolina had three sacks on the day, including a 7-yard stop by Naz Jones, a 17-yarder by Dajaun Drennon on an intentional grounding call and a 7-yarder by Malik Carney on another intentional grounding.
• Junior wide receiver Austin Proehl matched his career high with seven receptions for 91 yards. Proehl finished the season with 43 catches for 597 and three touchdowns.
• Senior wide receiver Bug Howard had five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. Howard finished the season with 53 receptions and 827 yards and eight touchdowns. He fnished his career with 18 touchdown catches, which ranks tied for sixth at UNC.
• Carolina allowed just two net yards on punt returns in 2016. In 13 games this season, UNC opponents attempted just nine returns. Stanford had one punt return today for -4 yards. The longest punt return UNC allowed this year was three yards.
