Still not seeing "it" with this team (but that's not to say that they won't have "it" at some point). It feels like the guard play is where things are most lacking. Once again the Heels had a poor day with assists, tallying only 0.52 assists per field goal. That places this performance in the 29th percentile since the 3-point line was invented. Not once in the four games this season has the team had an even average night with assists. Some have said that the most important player for this team to reach its goals is RJ Davis. We've seen this program struggle each of the last two seasons with Caleb Love at the helm, and it really wasn't until they moved RJ Davis to PG until we saw the team jell. This season, so far, it isn't there. RJ seems injured as I watch him, too. His fingers are heavily taped, and so maybe that is bothering his play. Plus, he may still be struggling with finding out the balance between facilitator and scorer.
Unlike what we saw at this time last season, this team seems to be playing decent defense. So far opponents are only scoring 0.817 points per possession (the average on a season is usually 0.844 with a 0.035 standard deviation). So, on to Portland where we will get more of test. This team has a brutal schedule between now and Christmas, and it should be a great ride.
