Discussion
We need to file that game with FEMA.
This game earned some dubious honors (since 1996):
  • UNC has only performed worse than 0.68 points per possession on 31 occasions. The last time we performed this badly on offense was at UVA last season.
  • UNC has only allowed the opponents to score more than 1.10 points per possession on 34 occasions. The two times last time UNC performed this badly on defense were the Purdue and Kentucky games this season.
  • UNC has only performed worse at accomplishing Dean Smith's offensive and defensive goals 1 time since 1996 (935 games). That game was the @Maryland 40 point loss in 2003. Was this the worst showing by a UNC team since 2003? Really? Well, the Smith Index doesn't account for rebounding, and in this game the Heels had 7 more possessions than Miami due to a rebounding advantage. So it's debatable, however it should be noted as one of the all-time worst performances by a UNC team since 1996.
  • UNC's putrid 34% FG shooting has only been "worsted" on 30 occasions. The last time we shot that poorly, it was against Syracuse in 2020 and it shut down the entire sport.
  • Miami's 3 point shooting percentage, 46%, has been bested by 105 opponents.
  • Miami's 4.00 assist/turnover ratio is the 3rd highest allowed by UNC. The last team to allow more was the 2016 team at Notre Dame.
  • It was the 8th-worst Margin of Victory. The last 3 such defeats were this season against Kentucky, in 2020 against Syracuse, and 2012 at Florida State. The 2002 team was blown out by this many points only 3 times.
This was the first time since the Kentucky game that we faced a future NCAA tournament team, and this team finds itself dropping another road game. Next up, another likely tournament team, on the road, with a student crowd that will make a lot of noise.
