...and this one shows why Roy likes to schedule a game before the Maui tourney.

In a bush-league stunt UNC was not allowed to get in the building for a shoot-around and it showed in a horrible first half. Combine that with travel lag and some comically bad officiating and it made for one fugly game. We nonetheless managed to survive Joel Berry's worst offensive game as a Heel, and JJ wasn't much better.

- First half ugliness: Only 35 points scored, 2/11 from 3, 35% FG shooting and 14 Blown Assists in one half alone! Yikes.

- After another ugly start in the second half we settled down and eventually scored 48. and shot 63%

- Only 6 Fast Break and 24 Secondary Break pts. Ironically though, we pulled away in the second half by pounding the ball inside mostly in half-court sets, and (when we weren't getting hit with utterly invented offensive foul calls) our Bigs were just too strong, and they needed to be --- suffice to say nearly every time they scored was thru contact.

- 6/10 from 3 in the second half helped, and kudos to Nate and Kenny for taking up the 3-pt slack with JB and JJ cold as ice. 7th and BRob had a nice stretch early in the second half and Tony was a beast on the boards. Kennedy and Isiah both made some big conversions down the stretch and props to JB for continuing to play strong D and handing out 5 second-half Assists in the face of a miserable shooting night.

- Finally, a big shout out to Hawaii's home announcers for their candor. Gotta give em credit for pointing out the gawd-awful calls that came in bunches. Obviously they were pulling for their guys, but sounded like they were genuinely embarrassed by the zebras' performance on their home court.

Arright... that fugliness is done with. Mark it down to experience. Time for me to go to sleep and for the guys to wake up!

The travel thing is tough and jet lag, as I recall from my trips to the 50th, hits you over night the first couple of nights...6 hours difference is tough.
They should be okay by Maui. half hour flight over there. Wish they still gave out macadamia nuts on flight....

Yeah, this IMO was a jet lag special in the high lite clips looked like a lot of our shots were short, front rimming, indication their legs may not have been there. Nate stepped up big and showed that senior leadership we love, great on ya Nate! Hicks again, rock solid, very efficient, shooting a crazy % so far! Love Tony Bradley, kid is going to have a bunch of double doubles before he leaves us! Good to see 7th help us with some needed scoring, BRob as always came to play.

In a way this was good for us to have that game where Joel & Justin did not set the tone and had to have it come from other guys. With a couple days now to get their legs under them those 2 fellas will make that last game a distant memory. Not good news for the rest of the teams in the Maui Wowie!

I knew something was up when one of Joel's 3's hit the backboard first. Bet that doesn't happen again this year.

I'm probably wrong but it seemed like Nate shoulda had more than 3 assists. Maybe not. I agree,it was solid of the hometown announcers to be that candid about lousy officiating. I need to watch again to be sure, but among other things pretty sure I saw a clear dribble - stop completely - dribble again - pass - that ended in a three pointer for Hawaii, and a Hawaii player standing out of bounds under our basket "tip" the ball back to one of his teammates. Those refs did not pass the "eye test".

Ha! That's an understatement, soap. In the second half it looked like they were just making up their own rules and Hawaii was pulling flops that would embarrass a dookie, but hey, rather have a boner like that against them than against a more talented team later.

Bradley (I think it was) caught an elbow to the head and the "refs" didn't even review the play. Then there was another elbow (to the chest) that they first called, and then spent 5 minutes looking at in review only to decide, "naw, not that bad, we take back that foul?!?!" Incompetent bush league homers for sure.

Four games into the season, JJ is still showing to be much more inconsistent than I would like. We need to be able to rely on him on a nightly basis and thus far in his Carolina career, that just hasn't happened.

The one against Bradley hands down should have been looked at. The one against Robinson I'm kind of indifferent. He did a pretty good selling job. It didn't look like much to me but I had no clue they could call a foul and then take it back. That puzzled me.

Outside of HIS officiating has never been worse! I have seen YMCA league "refs" that knew and enforced the rules better than those idiots. With the sell job in consideration, they should have changed the tech to a common foul. To simply rescind it should be cause for dismissal!
I'm extremely proud of our guys that they played through almost unprecedented adversity and NEVER even looked frustrated and NEVER let up in intensity and effort! Kids having poor shooting days hustled on D and rebounds. Kids getting phantom fouls called didn't become tentative on D. Everyone who entered the game gave maximum effort and all had a positive +/-. Peeps who had to be tired and drained, outworked a hyped up underdog at home! Everyone Coach Roy called on stepped up and made up for injury AND poor shooting by our two most important peeps!! Our team gutted out a win and even made it look easy in the second half when they played, at best, their C game!
This game really shows the character of this team!

Way to go Roy!
Way to go Tar Heels!

While I agree, BRob didn't take a blow to the head so a tech was not the right call, he very clearly did take a blow to the chest and that was absolutely a common foul. NEVER seen that before, they call a tech, review determine it isn't a tech but call nothing at all?

Another play, we are on defense and their guard drives from about the top of the key and goes off a high screen, I re-watched it because I was fussing about 7th allowing his man to run by him like that. Get this, after a commercial they went back to that same play and showed it as an example of how well the Hawaii kid was playing, only problem was the high screener just hip checked 7th in front of the refs and no call nor mention it was a hip check during the replay?

I know we had a margin of 22 on our pick thread, wonder how much margin those refs got...$$$

Our freshmen contributed 22 points, 20 boards, 5 assists, and only had 3 TO's in 45 minutes of PT. I realize it was only Hawaii but that's solid contribution there.

Great to see Nate come through when JJ and Joel couldn't throw it in the ocean, and they're surrounded by water.
