...and a nice show for the home folks.

- So... another squad with perimiter length, and as I expected their big Guards started off trying to post up our backcourt. KW's guy got a couple doing that but not without picking up a charge along the way, and JB was having none of it. Tulane also came in with some gaudy shooting numbers and a 6-1 record vs mid-level teams, but they hadn't seen Carolina-brand defense. Granted they missed a few open deep looks, but nothing came easy for them in the first half. We lost our focus a bit in the second half with a big working lead, and Tulane started knocking down some inside-out 3s to keep the margin from increasing markedly, but I really liked our first-half focus.

- Remarkably, we scored 52 in the first half with only 9 Fast Break and 13 Secondary Break pts --- much like last game, it was a story of tremendous execution in our half-court Passing Game and set plays. In the second half our transition game took over (see below). Included in those modest 1st half transition numbers was a beautiful Kenny Williams coast-to-coast to beat the buzzer.

- Speaking of KW, watching him closely today I think it's safe to say Roy is green-lighting him and he's looking for his shot. In fact, he got a bit too frisky at one point, getting away with a double-dribble that came from eschewing the extra pass to a wide-open JB. That notwithstanding, it's good to see Kenny feelin' it these days!

- One concern was that the Core Four scored 43 of the 52 pts in the first half. Yes, they were very good but the bench not so much. Fortunately the reserves stepped up in the second half and showed some encouraging moments. After once again incurring Roy's wrath in the first half, Jalek seemed to get comfortable with some productive extended second half minutes. I was very happy to see that.

- Also happy to see Huff do well. Bless his heart, big fella has a case of Joel James hands catching passes, but when he did get the ball he had some nice finishes, as well as strong board work. Huff also had a nice Blocked Shot in Help (despite being held). Our young Bigs held their own today combining for 24 and 14.

- Also, we didn't go Small once --- mostly Hybrid --- and even went Traditional for a spell in the second half.

- Another concern was 16/29 FT shooting --- and the frosh Bigs were te main culprits. They've been pretty solid at the line most of the early season, but today's 2/10 ain't gonna cut it. It was a decently called game, and we got a fair number of attempts --- which believe me, I'll take anytime with a crew that includes Tim Nestor and Les Jones --- just can't afford to leave those points at the stripe as we go forward!

- Back to the good: I know it's a recurring theme, but Andrew PLatek can flat play the game of basketball. He didn't get much run in the first half, but with Kenny getting in quick foul trouble in the second, AP took over the 2-spot and showed what was up. Obviously it was great to see that first 3-ball splash down, but he does so many things right on both ends. And let me tell ya, our transition game kicked into gear when he came in. The JB/AP backcourt led us to a quick 19 pts in just over 6 minutes (over 3 PPM!), including 3 Fast Break and 11 Secondary Break pts.

- Another double-double for Luke with 22 and 10, but I was more impressed by his floor game and defense today. Nice interior passing and some good defense as well including 4 Blocks.

- And finally, it's such a pleasure for this ol' coach to watch Joel Berry, game in and game out. He plays the PG position in a manner that brings the old "coach-on-the-floor" cliche to life. Even though he got a bit frisky with a couple of pitch-aheads in transition today, I don't know that I've even seen a PG with better floor command. He knows what to do and when to do it... when to pick things up or restore order. His second half take for an And-1 at the basket was vintage JB, as was making a point of forcefully placing the ball on the floor after the finish. Love my Dog. And he's just so damned good on defense --- man-up and Help --- and the stat-keeper even shorted him a second Blocked Shot today. C'mon man... when your (maybe) 6'0 PG rejects em, ya gotta give a brother proper credit! :D

OK, another solid win with good energy. Take care of business and keep getting better.

Nice recap Gary.
I agree, Joel got short changed on one block... and it looks like the scorers table owes Luke an assist!
Very good to see Roy using the blowout to give more players some time: BRob, Platek and Felton saw a lot of the court whilst KW, JB and Theo played less than 30..... those minutes will likely prove important at the pointy end of the season.

Thanks for the recap I look forward to them every game! Today was fun to watch for sure..I was glad to see our bench and the younger guys get extended minutes. One play that comes to mind was the fast break where someone threw it ahead to Brooks and without hesitation made a nice pass to Manley for the and one! Ball hardly ever hit the floor..that was a beautiful play that defines our fast break!

Guess who?

RW quote:
I’ve had a coach tell me about one of our current freshmen, ‘You’re offering him a scholarship?’ I said to him, ‘He doesn’t have to play for you. He has to play for me.’ And that guy is going to be a good player.”

Andrew Platek?

Andrew Platek?
Yes. And Roy went on to say in a previous interview that Andrew would help us beat that coach one day. That tells me it was an ACC coach. Would LOVE to know who.

To be fair.... that quote could have been about all the freshmen with the exception of Jalek.... and yeah, would love to know who the coach is/was.... wonder if Platek knows?

A bad highlight (for us)... and this not to pick on BRob, just want to illustrate what went wrong:
a05PzR.gif

Carolina defenders are taught to force sideline-baseline, but here BRob just gets too aggressive to the ball-hand on the initial move, enabling the highlight dunk by opening a cross-over path to the middle. There was no need to go after the initial move --- just keep forcing in same direction and the driver would have dribbled right into Theo's help area. In other words the driver was initially going right where we where we want him to go. Just maintain discipline and trust your teammates. Not always an easy thing to do.

Thanks for the recap. I was out running errands today and didn't have a chance to watch any of the game. I'm glad to hear Jalek is showing signs of improvement. The kid has all the potential to be a star, he just needs to listen to Roy and his upperclassman teammates and work hard to get better each day. Especially since he will more than likely be given the keys to the Ferrari next season.

Nope. Still being held out.

That's the right move at this point in the schedule. They have a game against Western on Wednesday and then a nice long break after that. Definitely a good time for our guys to get some much needed rest.

Nice report again Gary.

I really liked the way we came out of the gates. We had a lot of energy and were ready to go. We played 3 games in 5 days and you wouldn't have noticed it.
I think one thing about Luke's game that may be overshadowed due to his recent play is his passing ability he had 4 assists again today.
As Gary would say don't poke the dog, after a little trash talking from Tulane, JB got going and can I say his shot is looking silky smooth he almost had 2 more threes that dropped in.
How great is Kenny's on ball defense. I love a guy who takes pride in playing D, but Kenny has just taken it to a new level.
Did he draw a charge today?
Oh Heel Yea!!
I think these bigs are going to have a chip on their shoulders, a lot of people were doubting them coming in and they have already contributed, just wait until they get more acclimated. I say they just need to look at Kenny and Luke two guys who were also doubted before coming to Carolina and have become a huge part of our team and really are something special. Just keep working guys!!
I know it happened late in the game but the shades of Jalek at the end have to get you excited. The kid is really an outstanding passer and can take anyone off the dribble. I think he really needed a game like this to get some confidence. I'm telling you this is going to get him going. In his interview, he talked about how Kendall Marshall has been there to help him, certainly another good guy to have in your circle. The kid also has a good mindset saying that he is trying to take things one step at at time.
Garrison played with some good enegry tonight and also has shown some good passing ability. He also played more under control.

Also, I remembered in your last report about our offense being effective out of the half court and I tried to pay more attention to it today. Our movement without the ball and our unselfishness really is making the offense flow very nicely in set plays. I totally think that Joel and Theo are extremely important for us in their abilities to drive to the cup and creating space for open shooters who can cash in. Seeing that today, I instantly thought about how great of a threat Cam will be in our offense.

Yeah that looked bad on us, but holy cow that was a Theo-like highlight slam. I can appreciate it more since we won handily.

Kenny did indeed draw a charge, and did it on-ball. Dude is a clinic on playing defense with your feet.

And yeah, as for the half-court efficiency you couldn't be more right about JB and Theo... Kenny and Luke as well... and throw in Andrew. The Passing Game and the way these guys are playing off each other in what is essentially a free-lance offense is fun to watch.

No longer the BIG fish in a small pond, Felton is adjusting.
Now this is truly just my opinion, but I believe Jalek has a pretty short leash. There are flashes of brilliance then you see Roy all but give a tug on him. Somethings just not adding up. I really wanted to see him in with the starters and less of Berry today amid the blowout, but Roy saw fit to put Joel back in the game again. Hence the only opinion that matters. RW

Well --- and I really want to see Jalek hit his stride sooner rather than later --- Roy does have some things that will get anybody on the bench, and one of those is effort... especially running the floor and getting after loose balls. Jalek violated the former in the first half.

I was however, encouraged that Jalek got into the flow when he got more time late. He still needs to learn to not always immediately put the ball on the floor off catches, and to move the defense with his dribble and simple perimeter passes. He has good instincts for the position and the spacing is better than when 7th runs point, but he still doesn't force the defense to react to him before he uses his dribble. Once he masters that there will be more driving lanes available and the ceiling is the roof, as it were.

Best to hear it from Adam Lucas:

Beautiful game on our end. We shot ~70% on two's and nearly doubled them up on rebounds. They had nothing to slow us down inside.

Can't believe they shorted Joel a block. It's not like those were subtle blocks, give it to him!

I'm also excited to see Cam with this team, and watch the younger players continue to progress.

He is going to learn the value of a 2 handed pass as opposed to that casual 1 handed off the dribble stuff he tossed today...

Pretty positive it was about Platek. I feel like I remember Roy saying that quote about Platek explicity in the preseason.

We know for sure Andrew Platek is YOUR GUY. Guess we going to have to hear about him every game no matter what this season.

When a freshman shows what he's shown he deserves mention. I recall often mentioning Luke and Kenny during their freshman seasons.

Andrew Platek?

K-Rat was probably the coach.

I doubt K & Roy converse much when they're out evaluating. I actually think it was Pitino, & if that's the case, Andrew will not have a chance to make him eat his words......... personally at least!
I agree with ya. I was just taking a poke at my favorite rival coach. :)

It could be. What I am fairly certain about is that it's an ACC guy --- could even be an Assistant.

To be fair, those 2 weren't easy passes. I might even say they were ill-advised passes. Highlights if caught and finished. But more experienced players could have flubbed them.

Glancing at the box score, it looks like Huff didn't get the blame for those TOs (since he had none, to go with his 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks - in just 12 minutes. Damn fine performance, imo.

Huff may have the most questionable hands of our scholarship bigs, but I think he's already better than JoelJ. Not to knock JJ but that was his recognized weakness.

I also liked that short jumper from the middle of the lane. If he has that in his arsenal he can help break zones.

ACC coach for sure, but not the rat.
RW dont associate with that guy on the recruiting trail.

This, plus I thought it would have to be Pitino, Larranega, or Boeheim since nobody else in the league would have enough cred to tell Roy who he should or shouldn't offer a scholarship to.

I’m with you on this one. Passes were suspect. Grant it huffs hands need work but dang, those two were hard and forced
