Impressions from this game...

I felt in some ways we played smoother vs Wofford than we had played in our first 2 but I want to give that Wofford team credit, they hung in there real tuff. They were out gunned but those kids played with an impressive degree of grit, hit some tuff shots. Thou not nearly as talented I thought their front court group played with much more grit than our front court did, especially in that first half.

With such a huge size and talent mismatch up front, why did our front court guys spend the first 10mins shooting fade away jump shots? Jackson still not hitting jumpers because he is still rushing his shot, Justin, ever hear of this really cool new thing that was invented called a pump fake? Yeah, it is neat, you receive the pass, the defender flies out at ya and you do this pump fake thingy & the defender flies by ya, it is cool, you should try it some time...

But they did settle down, finally realized the length advantage and began pounding the ball inside to Meeks and Brice and rather than fall away our bigs went straight to the cup, well until Joel came in and all the sudden once again he forgot he is 6'11" and 275lbs and should be able to establish most any position he wants against a 6'7" 230 defender. Kudos to Berry for finding them, couple sweet slips by Jackson, and Theo (who was IMO by far better last night than in either of the first 2 games, may have had some rust that needed shaking off).

Lot of times I find the game off the ball as entertaining as the one on the ball, Joel Berry and Theo were really solid off the ball last night, Britt was as well, again, for the 3rd straight game, solid. I don't know that I could come up with 3 games all last season Nate was solid on the defensive end but so far he is 3 for 3. Collectively we have got to be a little closer to the spot up jump shooters, we were consistently just a step or 2 to far from them last night and those Wofford kids hit those shots. I saw a lot of Jackson flying out to try to defend late, Pinson at times as well. Berry eat his guy alive on the defensive end, kid is just tuff minded, no bells or whistles just tuff as a Waffle House steak.

This Wofford team, projected to finish second in their conference, played Missouri all they wanted in their last game, I felt played really hard against a mush stronger opponents on the road, their coach has to be proud of his guys.

One thing that bugs me, Brice, I know it is fun & all to get that real sweet smack it back down their throat with force shot block but will ya ever consider at least trying what John Henson was so good at, blocking the shot but controlling the ball after the block, rather than blocking it 30ft away? I mean hey, it ain't volley ball where you look for that sweet spike, it is basketball and it is actually a better thing if your team can control the ball after you block it.

For me the guy I maybe focused more on last night was Theo, I love that kid, I have been waiting to see him lock on his defensive assignment thru the first 2 games, saw him begin to do that last night. Helped out a little to far at times and couldn't recover, but I didn't feel that same level of intensity from Theo in the first 2 games, I saw some of that intensity return last night, not all the way back yet but I see him really starting to settle in. Is it just me or does anyone else get the feeling that Theo is what JP wanted to be but just was not able to deliver? Theo is a wonderful passer but he sets the pass up so much better than JP did. JP tended to telegraph his passes, Theo on the other hand really sets up that right angle to get his passes on target and slips it in. Jackson, thou he has not shot the ball well so far has also showed that ability to pass the ball really well for his size.

Last 2 games I would have graded them C, this Wofford game I would put at a strong C+.

Theo impresses more and more each game! Berry-Britt both have played SOLID. Brice is Brice, his whole problem is between his ears. All kind of talent, just seems to forget how-what to do with it.

Love Hicks-Meeks, game is coming to them and they looking good!

We still need to give Big Joel gun powder every day for breakfast, let the other team KNOW how big your are!

Justin is starting out poorly but he will come around, of all our players, think he misses Marcus the most.

additional notes: Sorry for the delay guys, but I noticed some statistical things that smelled fishy and caught my eye the first time I watched... and my eyes never lie, so I went back and watched the full replay for more detail, which often speaks to the folly of merely relying on box scores, btw.

- Jackson, while still not in sync from deep, played a very nice floor game, moving without the ball, driving and dishing.

- We are simply a better team for JP not returning. As ,much as I liked the guy, it is amazing how much faster things move when the ball isn't sticking to one guy's hands.

- Brice is still Brice, but he's doing better at staying out of foul trouble and is becoming the double/double machine he needs to be. Kennedy needs to utilize those great hands a bit better, but is more aggressive this season. That being said.....

- We're putting up Dean Smith era shooting pct numbers (over 50% each game)... just imagine what they would be if our Bigs were finishing more efficiently (more on that below)! So many of our paint baskets are coming from put-backs and tip-ins because we missed from close the first time.

- Not only JJ's but Joel Berry's line struck me as misleading, and on further review, it was. My first question was how the hell did he end up with just 4 assists given the beautiful way he was distributing the rock? Answer: Blown assists (where a guy fails to convert or gets fouled without making the basket). Dean used to keep track of those for good reason. I noticed several in the first two games --- this time I went back and actually tracked them. There were 11, count 'em 11 blown assists from JB --- 7 in the second half alone. Obviously a number of those are expected in any given game, but I can tell ya, that 11 is higher than you would expect even for a HS game. Even with just a modest conversion rate, JB's assist line should have been 9+.
The box score had JB for 3 TOs, which is correct, but one came on an offensive foul call (yes, those count) that was so absurdly bad that all Roy could do was laugh and throw up his hands at the refs. JB handled the ball and ran the offense exclusively for 35+ minutes, so 2 legit TOs is pretty darned good. He also had 4 steals, caused two more Wofford TOs and drew a charge. (Speaking of box scores, although not significant it had him for two 3-pt attempts which is incorrect. The shot at the end of the first half came after the buzzer and would not have counted.

- Finally, this is not so much statistical as it is rhetorical. The great Adam Lucas (best writer who ever wrote anything about Carolina) wrote something rather curious in his Rapid Reactions. Talking about Berry's active hands on defense he prefaced it with although Berry "still get beaten off the dribble occasionally" . Huh? If he was talking about this game even that didn't compute. Garcia scored 5 points while Berry was guarding him (which was most of the night) --- a 3 off a kick-out when JB helped on a drive, and a forced long 2 off a double screen, and those came in the first 3 minutes of the game -- the other 3 he made was against Hicks on a transition switch. Oh, and the number of times Berry got beaten off the dribble in 35+ minutes last night? Exactly zero.

Thanks, Gary. I appreciate you doing these write-ups after games. I am really enjoying having a real point guard this season... sucks a little that we had one last year too and didn't get to enjoy him, but it is what it is. Gotta ask though... where's your boy Stillman?

Tokoto was definitely a ball stopper and as much as I loved watching his highlight reel leaping ability, the team is better off with him gone. Not saying he was a detriment, but he kinda was. The free flowing movement of the offense is greatly enhanced this year and a pure pleasure to watch. And like DSouth said above, the off the ball game was absolutely beautiful to watch last night, especially the Heels defense. Britt, Berry, and Pinson were absolutely dogging their men through multiple screens and the good majority of the 3's that Wofford had were merely off of over helping on defense.

Add to that, I like how balanced our offensive game has been thus far. Here's where the Heels stand in scoring:

Kennedy Meeks 16.33ppg
Brice Johnson 16ppg
Joel Berry 15ppg
Nate Britt 13ppg

As has been the case the last couple of years, the Heels have made a visible effort to get the bigs going early, especially Brice, and I do believe it is paying off. It will be interesting to see how things go once Marcus suits up. I would imagine that both Berry and Britt will see their minutes cut by 5-7mpg just to balance out the load. I would also venture to say that Justin Jackson will get a cut in minutes as Pinson slides over to the 3 occasionally.

Thanks... and hey, SW is ready and waiting. Ironically the fact that JB has taken control of the PG minutes and Nate has stepped up enough to not diminish his role (which was a big question mark heading in) has kept Stilman on the bench for the most part. But I'll still trust him any day, any time if his number is called. It's good to have that kind of depth.

Yes Gary, but why compare that to someone who logged 4 at the point?

This is one old Tar Heel who is THRILLED we have both Berry & Britt.
Only because it was the way it worked out, Mike... wasn't meant to downgrade Nate's contribution. Most of that came at the 2, which it should.
The only reason it was worth mentioning was that JB was pretty much the PG last night... which again, is as it should be, especially against a quality opponent. Wofford by all rights should have beaten Arky last season in the NCAAs. Roy wasn't taking any chances --- the only time JB came out was to get a quick blow and then he was right back in --- and Roy choosing to approach it that way (hopefully) bodes as a very encouraging sign.

Just from these old eyes Gary, seems you are always pitting Berry against Britt and I just don't think that necessary. JMHHO

Kinda like pitting Theo against Jackson, wonder how long that takes once Paige is back?

Not at all. Last season there were huge differences in the team performance by guard combinations. I'd post the same things if it was Stilman White or Marcus Paige. Last season for example (as I mentioned last week), JB and Nate had very good production when they were on the court together, and have done pretty well this season as I thought they would, and I have posted that. And Theo has been better for us team-wise than Tokoto was last season. I have posted that.
It is what it is. Sorry if it sounds like anything other than that.
I've given Nate big props for stepping up his game. He has made a huge contribution, but let's not pull any punches: His by far best role for us is giving quality minutes at the 2.
