The bar chart on 3rd down% shows a huge difference yet the numbers are about the same?
I think 3rd down conversions will be strategically important for both teams..........especially for FSU because that will allow for long sustained drives that eat up the clock and keep UNC's passing attack off the field.
It's interesting that FSU allows more yards per carry and more yards per pass attempt than UNC. But, they only allow opponents to convert on 36% of 3rd downs compared to UNC's 48%. That helps the Noles enjoy an average TOP of over 36 minutes. If UNC could just get its 3rd down defense percentage to about 40%, we would be a much better team.
I agree wholeheartedly with this sentence. We saw as much with Pitt, once our defense got off the field on some 3 and outs our offense was really given a chance to ramp it up and give us the edge. 3rd down defense is so crucial in a football game, especially for a team that needs as many offensive possessions as we can possibly get with Fed's boom or bust offensive scheme.
