Wow no shortage of numbers that really jump out. How are we running the 10th most plays per game in the ACC with Fed's hurry up offense...

#4 in the country in passing yards per game allowed. Wow. Even with factoring in the GT game that completely blows my mind.

A couple quick hitters:

- Wake's offense versus UNC's defense will be an interesting matchup. The Deacs have been awful running the ball and the Heels have been awful defending the run. The Deacs have had success in the passing game and UNC is 3rd in the ACC and 8th nationally is pass efficiency defense. Something has to give.

- After the bye week, UNC still look extremely efficient on offense. They rank 1st in the ACC in yards per play, yards per carry, yards per pass attempt, passing efficiency, and third-down conversions. Wake's defense has been plenty respectable to this point but they should be tested this Saturday.

- I updated the stats this week to show Sack Rate, which the percentage of dropbacks in which a sack occurs. UNC has fared well on offense, only giving up a sack on 4% of its dropbacks (3rd ACC, 35th nationally). The Heels are still horrible on defense, though, only registering a sack on 1.7% of opponents' dropbacks (14th ACC, 126th nationally i.e. next to last in the country).

- I'm going to continue mentioning penalties as long as UNC continues to not suck in that department. The Heels are only averaging 5 per game for about 39 yards, both of which are top 5 in the ACC and top 25 nationally.

- Apparently ACC teams are much better on defense than offense in the red zone. UNC is only scoring TDs on 59% of its RZ possessions, but that's good for 4th in the conference even though it's only 75th nationally. On the flip side, UNC is only allowing TDs on 60% of opponents' possessions. That's dead last in the conference but middle of the road (68th) nationally.

- UNC is the only team in the country that has yet to allow a punt return.

We've been extremely efficient on offense. We're 9th nationally in points per play, a metric that measures how quickly teams score. (Something I track behind the scenes but is too much to include in the numbers I post.)

Don't forget Delaware. They were a "running team" as well. Still, you can normalize for run/pass splits by looking at the yards per attempt number where the Heels rank 8th nationally. If we're being honest, though, we have yet to play a decent passing team outside of maybe Illinois. Wake will be our best test to date, and it should be a good one since 69% of their yards come through the air.

Wake played BC...

BC's #1 Rush Defense, #1 Pass Defense, #2 Scoring Defense...will negatively affect your offensive stats through six games.

On the flip side, BC's woeful offense will affect your defensive stats positively.

True.

What's funny is that if you remove the results from the Elon and BC games, Wake ends up with almost identical offensive stats for the season. It's like Elon and BC were a wash.

Points per Game
All teams: 20
w/o Elon/BC: 19

Rushing Yards per Game
All teams: 115
w/o Elon/BC: 113

Passing Yards per Game
All teams: 254
w/o Elon/BC: 257

If poor BC could just score 13 points a game, they could make a run at a national championship lol.

Everyone talks about the SEC's defenses (and with good reason), but this year, the ACC is king of defense. You know your league has some good defenses when you're 25th nationally in points allowed per game but only 7th best in your conference!

B1G is looking pretty good, too.

Top 25 Scoring Defenses by Conference:

7 - ACC
6 - Big 10
4 - SEC
2 - MAC
2 - Pac 12
1 - American
1 - Conference USA
1 - Mountain West
1 - Sun Belt

Top 25 Total Defenses by Conference:
7 - ACC
7 - Big 10
5 - SEC
4 - Mountain West
1 - MAC
1 - Sun Belt

I know it's skewed by how many pass attempts per game we've faced, but I don't care. Can we please revel in the fact that we are currently FOURTH in the country in passing yards allowed per game?

Yes. Yes we can.

But we can also revel in the fact we are currently EIGHTH in the country in yards per pass attempt, which "normalizes" the comparison of teams who have faced varying numbers of pass attempts. ;)

I just saw this stat on ESPN, thought it belonged here even though it's a post-game stat.

"Wake Forest lost to North Carolina 50-14, bringing coach Dave Clawson's ACC record to 0-9 in games when the Demon Deacons score a touchdown and 2-1 when they do not."

Dammit! I meant to include that last week.

They beat BC 3-0 earlier this season.
They beat VT 6-3 in overtime last year.
They lost to FSU 43-3 last year.

THIRD. BEST. PASSING YARDS ALLOWED PER GAME. IN. THE. NATION.

After watching last year's defense, that is amazing to me, schedule be darned. It is clear that we still don't have all the 'Jimmys and Joes' we need on defense, but this staff is still getting great results out of this group. That's coaching, plain and simple. Just imagine when we get some elite DLmen in here.....

Addazio won't listen to it, not even if he is forced to eat supper with me, but my advice for the BC future is: recruit QBs who can pass.

Simply add an above average passer to what BC has now, and BC is a very sound team.
