Sterling Manley

Nice debut! I think he is on some sort of minute restriction since he has been out for for so long. Could Manley be the answer at the 4 next season? If he keeps this up he may reach 4-star status. In fact, barring a major injury, I think you are looking at 4-star rating.

It says he played 15 out of the 16 minutes.

I am guessing it was 8 minute halves doing to just being a preview.

Steat, thanks for bringing this, been wondering how his season had started. Does sound like a good start, kinda reads like a Tony Bradley stat line from our season. I have tried to find how his season has gone with no success so your providing this was great news, KEEP US UPDATED IF YA CAN!

11 boards in 15 min vs. college kids (albeit D2) is very impressive. Excited to see him stay healthy and get on campus this summer.

WoW, I didn't even notice that was against a D-2 college! Damned impressive then!!!

Wait, I think I read that wrong. It said "one of the states best Division II programs" and I assumed college. Ohio could very well break their HS's out by division. Whoops.

But it does happen, KY played a team in their opening game that lost to Oak Hill, and then Huffman had a great game vs Oak Hill. At least that is what I read that Oak Hill had beaten the team Ky opened against.

Awesome find! Thanks. I get a very good vibe from Mr. Manley. Love that he works hard on both ends and is a real rim protector! I think we will soon forget how many stars he came with once Jonas gets his hands on the young man!

Oh boy. I mean I hope youre right but... Really?
Butt, take a look at open gym video that Roy attended several weeks ago.

IMO, if this kid stays healthy he will move up to at least a 4-star after the season. The kid has college ready moves right now. I will feel better with him coming off the bench next season and moving into a starting role the following season. On the other hand, if Roy does not get a Knox or a 5th-year senior, I see this kid starting at the 4 next season.

Note his comments at he end of the open gym video "Play some D" !!. Is this a Carolina Way player or what? Good get for the Heels.... The kid needs to stay healthy.

I mean he looks good there, although against what appears to be a junior high team. He shows some nice touch and athleticism. But for me, lets just say Id like to see him do it against some elite competition before Id even mention Antawn Jamison as a comparison.

Well, the stats above were against a Division II team. Have you seen the players Zion Willamson has been playing against? He put up 42 and 50 points against players recently in his private school conference. Zion definitely needs to transfer to a school like Oak Hill for his senior year. As far as Manley is concerned, he is playing against kids his own age. He is just a man playing against boys. When I say Antoine Jamison-clone, I want to preface that by saying he has many of the same moves that Jamison has around the basket. It remains to be seen whether he will be anywhere near as productive as Jamison in his career. The same with Tony Bradley who plays a lot like Tim Duncan. Having similar moves to star players is no guaratee that they will be as good as those players for their full careers. You hear it all the time...."he is similar" to "X" player in the way he plays the game. That's all I meant here.

Steat I wished I could like your post ten times. Totally understand your point. Tony does play similar to Timmy, and I have said that before. Doesnt mean he will have the same career. These kids have got to remind peeps of someone who has played the game before, and growing up kids do mimic their game around others of their same size and skill set. I'm exited about Manley also. Could be one of the best finds in a while.

I have high hopes for a healthy senior season for Sterling. He has a world of potential and Roy got a steal.

That was a high school team in a different division then where Manley's team plays!!!! They have been a dominant team in recent years in Ohio HS Basketball though

From Saturday's pre-season game against First Love Academy. 11 for 11 from the free throw line. Count me in baby!

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (11/26/16) --- In a Saturday preseason showdown against a stout First Love Christian Academy squad, North Carolina signee Sterling Manley took the next step. Leading Pickerington Central to a 81-72 win, Manley recorded 25 points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocks. He got the better of 6-foot-8 Siena signee Prince Oduro, finishing nearly all of his attempts at the rim. Manley was also perfect from the charity stripe, hitting all 11 free throw attempts.

“We were talking about colleges and coach asked, ‘So where do you really want to go?,’ and without thinking much about it I said my dream would be to play for coach Roy Williams at North Carolina,” Manley said. “I only said it half seriously. I had always liked UNC because they produced so many great big men. Coach Hedgepeth said, ‘OK, let’s make it happen then,’ and we left it at that.”

We have one that can see!

I wonder why he can see so clearly what so many other Bigs seem to have missed entirely? Just smarter than your average high schooler I guess.

I still follow as much as possible but live in NC now.... And with Manley coming next year will definitely be keeping up as much as I can

11/11 from the FT line from a HS Big? Hell yes, I'll take that.

Love that to gary, not just that our bigs go to the line a lot but that it also indicates the kid could have a solid mid range jumper. Last season, Brice or Hicks march to the line it most of the time was money in the bank but did ya notice, when Brice's free throw % went up his mid range became more accurate? Hicks, see that mid range shot showing itself real nice so far this season!

I really hope Manley is already working in his jump hook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That caught my attention as well. Obviously he's a kid I never got to see play live, but looking at what little video is out there you can see the potential to be a very good shooting Big in general. And folks should never underestimate FT shooting. Bigs are gonna get fouled in our system. Psycho showed how devastating it is for a Big to make around 80% of those ops, and Brice did again last season.

In my mind, Manley is the 5* big we haven't gotten yet. It's just that only his coach, Rob and Roy saw this in him so quickly! This man-child will anchor our post for as long as we are lucky to have him. He is the perfect Tar Heel recruit, humble, hard-working, coachable, and well spoken!

Hopefully he will stay healthy and this will be an antidote for those who are obsessed with * rankings. Tony Bradley's coach was adamant Tony was the best pure Big in the last class and he may well on his way to proving it --- but it took til late to get that precious 5th *. The woefully under-ranked and best PG from that 14 class is leading us right now, and his successor (who happens to carry the name Felton) is also comically under-ranked.

But they are all 5 stars. Or in Berrys case high 4 to 5 depending on the service-and a Mcdonalds all american. The statement about it proving anything about those "obsessed with star rankings" isnt very relevant in any of these players cases.

...as if on cue.
It's totally relevant, because even when we do get 5*s there are people --- like um (cough, cough) --- who will bitch that we aren't getting "top-10" 5*s.

ha who ever said anything like that? Youre acting as if Bradley, felton, JB werent highly regarded out of high school. For me personally I recognize UNC runs best with high level 4 and 5 star recruits. Wether they are rated 5th or 20th is irrelevant to me. All you did with your post was prove what "the people that bitch about stars" have been saying-that we would love to continue to reel in these types of guys as opposed to lower tier 4 and 3 star guys.

And most importantly, really wanted to be a Tar Heel.

I think that what he actually proved was that whiners whine no matter what the circumstances!

Tar Heel fans ought to know by now that our in-house evaluation trumps ALL other sources! Roy and Co. can find talent and are not blinded by bling from multiple stars, they look for something to work with and for something that fits our need and culture. This strategy is a bit subtle for many and that is too bad.

OK whatever. I know how to read and I've seen the posts to the contrary from you and others. Bottom line is that stars and rankings are nice but they aren't the be-all and end-all. The players I mentioned are all better than their rankings and Manley is eons more talented than any ranking he has now or achieves this season will indicate. That is the point.
