Student Section -- DTH article

Build a new arena or add luxury boxes. It won't change until one of those things happen. They paid to build it, so they should get to keep the benefits that were guaranteed to them or be given a refund.

The DES is plenty loud and plenty full for almost all home games. Students should attend the games and make a lot of noise AND save the complaints for the lack of beer sales and the food prices! I enjoyed every game possible as a student and still do. I might be fat, but I ain't no cat and I still enjoy jumping around with my Tar Heel peeps! (disclaimer: I didn't read the article so if I'm off base so be it) Freaking youngsters need to get off my lawn any how!

Unfortunately, I've read this same article in about 10 different forms - first time being my freshman year after the Maryland snow game. At least that got the conversation going that led to the risers. Agree with Tarheel0910 that the conversation won't change unless the arena does. It would be great to have the noise intimidation factor at our place but that just isn't usually the case. Still a great arena and a great place to go watch a game.

One of the considerations in a new arena set up is that many of our seat holding Rams/Ed Found folks are aging out. What the University seriously needs to consider is that some seats may "revert" back to the University who then needs to re-sell the seat. A half scholy "endows" a seat, that was running about 75k a few years back. I can assure you that when the place was built Skipper et al were not asking those prices with the exception of the corporate seats at courtside.
I would love to see the first ten rows in the lower level become permanent seating for students. All those folks that bought both corp seats and their private seats, at a much lower rate, elsewhere can bite me.

That is why I didn't read the article; it has been said a thousand times and the answer is always the same! I love the fact that we can claim the Tar Heel Way makes us different and part of it is that we take care of our own and keep our promises. The deal was that if you guys give us this vast amount of money we will give you the option to get court side seats. Tar Heels keep their word! When a new arena is built, I support changing things, but not until.

I also disagree that the place doesn't have intimidation. The banners, atmosphere, and noise certainly do affect opponents! If students want the place to be intimidating, then make more noise!

At the very least, come up with something other than Jump Around

"I'll serve your ass like John McEnroe
If your girl steps up, I'm smacking the hoe. Word to your moms, I came to drop bombs. I got more rhymes than the Bible's got Psalms..."

We will end up on opposite sides of this one then. I have attended 100's of games and it gets really loud at times. I have watched wide-eyed players intimidated by the banners and history as they leave the tunnel. I watched Peanut Head from FSU choke on his own fear and cough up a 20+ lead in the second half. (Wake also). I've seen our home energize the team and suck the life out of opponents. The arrangement does not prevent the crowd from being a factor, only the will of the crowd can do that! Putting the students at court-side would make them feel more a part of the game (and might even increase their impact some), but if you need motivation/proximity to scream for UNC, you aren't Family! How could 7 banners and dozens of other awards; the jerseys in the rafters; 21K fans in a sea of light blue not be intimidating to some teams? Jump Around might be a little dated (I was not aware of those horrendous lyrics), and it needs to change.

There are louder arenas, but not all of them are winners anymore either! (Moo (Reynolds especially), I'm looking at you!) Noise is not the only factor that matters here! To what do we attribute our win % at home then?

No.

I detest the song and the lyrics.

As for the arena, I'd like to see the students at court side. But I don't know how that could be accomplished.

This again? I saw who poasted it but had I not, I certainly could have guessed.

Look, am I envious of other programs' fan support? No. But I do realize other Tar Heel fans are. But I bet there are plenty of fans of other teams that are envious of our facilities, or culture, or coach, or ...something. We can't have it all. But if we can check off 9 out of 10 boxes, I certainly can live with that. Plus, I'd just prefer we're good enough to win without organized cheers or people popping blood vessels while screaming at the top of their lungs. It's just not at all a big deal for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'd never want to have our student section look as pathetic as the dorks in Cameron with their cheer sheets and their tear soaked face paint after taking an L, but I wouldn't mind a little more umph which could be accomplished by getting more students closer to the floor.

Yup that is the key point...there will be no change until we build a new arena and I support this idea. We committed to them in exchange for money and should keep our end of the bargain. It is not like we don't have as good a winning % at home as almost anybody!

BTW: the new Arena better be the DES II with Roy Williams Court or I might.....I don't know what but it will be serious!

There are a few frames of thought.

1) The entitlement mentality of students is crazy. They want, want, want, yet....coming from someone that has been to a ton of games and has had season tickets for over a decade...the students don't always fill their seats they currently have. Sure, they do when we play Duke or have a big game, but that's not always the case. When they do, a good portion of them are just there looking at their phones, etc. The ones in the risers are active, but that's just a couple of hundred. Prove you want to be there, you want to be vocal and maybe you will get an ear. The ones that have the premium seats paid to build the DES. We didn't build it on the backs of the regular school budget or with state funds. So, we kind of need to keep the deal we promised. Don't get me wrong, I look for seat upgrades every year due to some of these people dying off. :)

2) I would LOVE to have the students around the court. I think you could do it easily with risers all the way around and actually add capacity. You would only be eliminating a few rows of chairs to accommodate the risers. It would be exciting. But, I don't think that makes the DES that much louder. The design absorbs sound. It gets pretty loud for big games and I've been in it where you can't hear the person next to you. That's amazing, but not something that happens all the time due to the design.

Overall, we hear this every year. Until we offer the people "something" for breaking our agreement or we build a new arena...we can recycle this thread every year.

Coach, and it is always a pleasure to see that you posted, I think it is as much catching the camera as it is decibels levels. WE all know, the Cam-moron crazies get so much pub but it is how they are grouped being camera friendly as well as the fact they play in darn near a high school gym. I would love to get the students down on the court and I do think if they are there you would see much less cell phone activity and much more roudyness and I think that would be a good thing.

Now what I want and how to actually get that done, sure, easy to say but much harder to do.

While we are recycling gripes; Tell our fans to come on time and never leave early!

I bet you Roy would exchange calling a Time Out for a punctual crowd that stays to the last horn!
