Chazz Surratt’s conference said he was its best offensive player. A panel of sportswriters and a popular sports drink concurred he was the state’s best player. And now one of the nation’s leading scholastic sports websites has declared he’s the best on a national level.

MaxPreps (maxpreps.com) announced Thursday it has named the former East Lincoln quarterback its national small schools player of the year, giving the future North Carolina quarterback a full circle of local-, state- and national-level awards.

MaxPreps divides its postseason awards into four categories: small, medium and large schools, and an all-american team made up of the nation’s best regardless of school size.

Surratt, a first-team small schools all-american, was joined by his younger brother, Sage, who was named to the small schools all-american second team as a wide receiver.

Chazz Surratt has already been named the Gatorade N.C. Football Player of the Year, and was voted the state’s offensive player of the year by the Associated Press. He and Sage were also both on the AP’s all-state team.

Surratt, who announced last week he was staying home with the plans of returning to the hardwood early next month after an elbow injury suffered during the state playoffs had him prepared to enroll early at North Carolina, accounted for 3,536 yards passing and 1,345 yards rushing last season. He had a hand in each of East Lincoln’s 30 consecutive wins, including breaking the state record for career total yards with 16,593 the final time he took the field. He also owns the state record for touchdown responsibility with 229 career scores.

Sage Surratt, a junior who’s undecided on his college choice but has multiple Division I offers for both football and basketball, finished the season with 1,769 receiving yards and 25 TD receptions. His 3,723 career receiving yards and 232 career receptions are both fourth on the state’s all-time receiving lists. His 53 career receiving TDs are good enough for third all-time.
