TAR HEELS THIRD IN FINAL FALL DIRECTORS’ CUP STANDINGS
CHAPEL HILL –– The University of North Carolina is in third place in the final fall sports Learfield Directors’ Cup standings. The Tar Heels amassed 342 points in the fall, including 90 by the field hockey team, which reached the final four for the 20th time and played in its 16th national championship game.
Carolina is third nationally behind Stanford (479.5) and Syracuse (347.5). Others in the top 10 through the fall include Michigan, UCLA, Virginia, Minnesota, Washington, Notre Dame and Penn State.
In addition to field hockey, Carolina got 64 points from a ninth-place finish by men’s soccer, 60 points by a 15th-place poll finish by football, 50 points for 17th-place finishes by women’s soccer and volleyball and 28 points from a 32nd-place finish by women’s cross country.
The Tar Heels finished fifth in the Directors’ Cup last year and has placed in the top 10 18 times in the 22-year history of the award. UNC won the first Director’s Cup in 1993-94.
