TAR HEELS COMPILE RECORD-HIGH ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE

CHAPEL HILL – University of North Carolina student athletes compiled a record-high Academic Progress Rate of 987 in 2014-15 and compiled a four-year rating of 981, two points above the national rate. It is the second consecutive year the Tar Heels have set or tied their top single-season score in the APR.

The NCAA uses the Academic Progress Rate to track the academic performance of students who compete on varsity teams. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester by student athletes at every NCAA institution. The APRs released today include single-year scores for 2014-15 and four-year rates that reflect scores from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.

Carolina’s 2014-15 APR of 987 includes 18 sports that scored a perfect 1000 points. Five years ago, 10 Tar Heel teams scored 1000. Carolina’s APR has improved from 966 in 2011 to 972, 980, 984 and now 987.

“Tremendous credit goes to our students for their dedication and hard work in meeting and exceeding high standards in the classroom as well as in competition,” says Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. “It starts with our coaches recruiting young people who are committed to being a well-rounded student at a world-class university. Academic Progress Rates are just one measure of success but we are glad that they continue to trend upward at North Carolina.”

The 18 Tar Heel programs that scored a 1000 in 2014-15 include: men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, women’s golf, gymnastics, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, wrestling and volleyball.

Each of Carolina’s 28 teams rated at least 959 in 2014-15 with 21 scoring at least 990. By comparison, from 2009 to 2013, at least four UNC teams scored under 950.

Carolina’s all-sport, four-year rate of 981 includes six programs with a perfect four-year rate of 1000 – men’s tennis, women’s fencing, women’s golf, gymnastics, women’s tennis and volleyball. Last week, the NCAA recognized those six teams plus men’s swimming and diving for finishing in the Top 10 percent in the country in their respective sports.

Women’s fencing and women’s golf earned Top 10 recognition for the 11th time in as many years. They are two of only 110 teams across the NCAA (13 in the ACC) that have accomplished that feat. No other public institution in the ACC has had more than one team honored in each of the APR’s 11 years.

Twenty of Carolina’s sports rated 980 or better and scored above the overall national four-year rating and 19 UNC teams scored above the four-year rate in their respective sport.
