TAR HEELS EXCEED NATIONAL AVERAGE IN GRADUATION SUCCESS RATES

CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina’s latest Graduation Success Rate for student-athletes is 85 percent, a single point off the national average. The NCAA released data today for the incoming classes of 2005-2008.

Like last year, 10 of Carolina’s varsity teams scored 100 percent in the GSR, including men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, women’s golf, gymnastics, rowing, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis and volleyball. Those programs were among 20 Tar Heel teams that measured 80 percent or greater. A total of fifteen UNC programs scored in the 90s or higher.

The NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate includes transfer students and student-athletes who leave in good academic standing.

Twenty UNC teams posted higher individual team scores than the national average in their respective sports. Those included baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, women’s golf, gymnastics, men’s and women’s lacrosse, rowing, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis and volleyball.

Six programs that did not exceed the national average for their respective sports still had an average of at least 70 percent, women’s tennis and women’s basketball had scores of 89 and 85 percent respectively, and every sport scored at least 57 percent.

Seventeen sports exceeded their four-year average from a year ago.

Gymnastics scored 100 percent for the 12th year in a row. Rowing and women’s golf reached 100 percent for the 11th and 10th consecutive year, respectively. Women’s swimming and diving achieved 100 percent for the seventh straight year, one year ahead of men’s and women’s fencing.

Seven of UNC’s teams posted the highest scores across the Atlantic Coast Conference in their respective sports – field hockey, women’s golf, rowing, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis and volleyball.
