TAR HEELS EXCEED NATIONAL AVERAGE IN APR IN 23 OF 28 SPORTS
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina’s single-year Academic Progress Rate improved for the second year in a row and 23 of UNC’s 28 sports exceed the national four-year average in their respective sports in data released today by the NCAA.
The NCAA uses the Academic Progress Rate to track the academic performance of scholarship students who compete on varsity teams. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester by student athletes at every NCAA institution. The APRs released today include single-year scores for 2017-18 and four-year rates that reflect scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
Carolina’s four-year average is 991, which exceeds the national average by eight points (the overall national average of 983 is an all-time high). The Tar Heels’ four-year average is tied for third in the ACC with Boston College and Georgia Tech behind only Notre Dame (996) and Syracuse (992). Sixteen UNC teams are ranked in the top five in the ACC, including men’s and women’s fencing, men’s golf, gymnastics, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and women’s tennis, which are first or tied for first, and men’s basketball and wrestling, which are second or tied for second.
In addition to the 23 sports that exceed the national average for the four-year rate, two other Tar Heel teams equal their sport’s national average and two more are within five points.
Carolina’s single-year average for 2017-18 is 989, an increase of two points from a year ago. It is the fifth straight year UNC has amassed at least a 984.
Fifteen Tar Heel teams scored a perfect 1000 in 2017-18, 23 scored at least 975, 10 increased their single-year rate from the previous season and eight registered 1000s in at least back-to-back seasons.
The 15 teams which registered 1000s for 2017-18 include: women’s cross country, men’s and women’s fencing, men’s and women’s golf, gymnastics, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and wrestling.
In the four-year rates, every Carolina team had at least 964, eight scored perfect 1000s, 16 scored at least 990 and 27 of 28 had at least 975.
