CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina placed second in the country in the men’s competition and tied for fourth nationally in the women’s in the final standings of the 2015-16 Capital One Cups.

Carolina joined Oklahoma and Stanford as the only three schools whose men’s and women’s programs both placed in the top 10. This is the second time in the six-year history of the Capital One Cup the Tar Heel men and women both finished in the top 10 (also in 2012-13).

The Capital One Cup is awarded to the men’s and women’s NCAA Division I programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men’s and women’s sports.

Stanford and Southern California won the 2015-16 men’s and women’s competitions, respectively.

Schools earn points based on top-10 finishes in NCAA Division I championships and in final official coaches’ polls across 21 women’s and 20 men’s sports.

Carolina won the women’s competition in 2012-13; the Tar Heel women have five top-10 finishes in six years. The second-place finish this season is the best finish among three top-10 performances by UNC’s men’s teams.

The Tar Heels won NCAA championships this year in men’s and women’s lacrosse. The field hockey and men’s basketball teams played in the national championship games and men’s and women’s tennis and men’s soccer also finished in the top 10.
