Tar Heels Respond To Blistering Halftime Speeches

I can't shake the feeling that coaching guys with "NIL" money is different. I've never heard of this being an issue, but the term do you care? Makes me think back to NIL money. The love players use to have was because they wanted a paycheck to do this. Just a thought, but when we look back at this season NIL is going to play a role.

I'm sorta surprised that blistering speeches occurred, or should have been needed. Those kids should be fully aware of the situation. I guess the speeches seemed to work for the first 5 minutes for sure. If they played the whole game the same way they played the first 5 minutes of the second half, they would have won by 20 plus points.

The kids have shown that they know how to do it, they just seem to lack the motivation to actually do it, consistently. It's really strange. I don't think they have a player that leads the rest.

I think you right about the lack of a natural leader who can get the guys right when things aren't going well... The upper classman are all sphynx's out there for the vast majority of the time.
I loved the energy and effort starting the 2nd half too. I think you have to use your bench because you can only go Mach 2 with your hair on fire for so long... Fatigue makes cowards of us all.

I'm sure the coaches are even more disappointed that this is needed this late in the season than we are! They actually sweated and bled for this team so I'm betting they can't fathom the lack of urgency! This might be the first time in my fandom that I think addition by subtraction is what we need! That being said, I do love how the fought and gritted out a win after digging such a big hole!

Effort is one thing every player can give to his team no matter the skill level! It is also one of the few things a coach can't fix! The team needs to either reflect individually or take some of their brothers behind the woodshed and.........

I grew up at a time when the woodshed was an integral part of coaching!

I agree that benching would be appropriate but it is problematic since it involves more than one starter and the peeps on the bench share the same issues! A more established coach could withstand the losses but a new one needs to value winning more. (Of course we still aren't winning enough so there's that)

I seem to remember Roy’s last year him stating he had to coach effort with this group which his something he hadn’t had to do with past teams

Fact is the starting 5 is just too tired to play 35+ minutes a game at a high level. Matador defense from tired legs. Bacot misses so many layups that should be dunks because he is tired. He plays so much better when he gets in foul trouble and gets some rest. Love throws up Crap cuz he just doesnt care and there are no repercussions for him doing so. When you are shooting your way out of a slump...there has to be someone to tell him that he just sucks at shooting. I, too, have gotten hot shooting before during a game and thought it would carry over to the next game and I sucked the next game and kept shooting till my coach pulled me out and asked me WTF I thought I was doing.

Good grief why do we still have to do these speeches?
Why is the question I as well would love to hear a answer to, I don't have one, have yet to see anyone else with the answer. Our head coach just said in his post ND game PC that he had to spend the first half coaching effort and the second half be was able to coach basketball?

Not gonna link to it but watch the pod cast from Dewy Burke after this ND game, it is "informative"...

It has been discussed at length on premium, and to a degree within our free content.

spot on D. I've referenced that podcast as well. provides great insight into how former players view this team. long story short, the effort and commitment to team basketball is unacceptable.

I remember Dean coaching effort by pulling all five guys from the game and showing them the bench. Didn't matter what the situation was.
Credit where it's due, man. Dean Edward Smith didn't give a shiz about the consequences when it really mattered.
