That's why he is the coach and thank goodness for that

After that 7-0 blitz to end the half that kept Miami in the game I too was scratching my head wondering even with Pinson and Berry in foul trouble why two freshmen were manning the back court with seniors White and Britt were available. But alas this couch potato coach like many others were looking at the move with out hearts instead of our minds. Anyone who watched the game absolutely knows that MIAMI looked flat and dead in the last 10 minutes when Carolina's fresher troops blew the game wide open. There has always been and always will be complaints about Coach Williams liberal substitutions and refusal to call time outs but today he gets the game ball for doing what he does best, coach...

I realized it was a strange lineup and we were up 12, and I said to my coworker "As long as they don't cut this to 3, I'll be happy." The ACCT is definitely gonna have some strange lineups, it's tougher keeping guys fresh with 3 games in 3 days (provided all goes according to plan), but I had faith in Roy there. They got tested, but we were able to put our foot on the gas in the second half and not look back. We were in control that whole game (well, after about the 6 minutes in point), and they made a run, but we answered nicely. On to the next

I agree wholeheartedly. Roy mentally plays a game of chest and 9 out of 10 times he is a few moves ahead of us. We will need those 2 at some point down the line. I didn't mind them getting those minutes. In addition, I like the faith it shows that he had in those 2 as well as in the team. The conf tournament was where Kenny Williams made his first impact last year. Have to think that gave him a boost

We are fortunate the short dude for Miami was cold as ice or this would have been much closer, especially given the style of "officiating".

Roy did a fine job, as did the players. But still I am glad short dude was off today.

ROy is set in his ways. Good thing is his way means 4 out of 5 times he is gonna win.

"Short Dude" is a very good shooter who did, indeed, have a bad day. He forced a bunch of shots at the end, but he's had excellent form on the Australian Junior teams in the past and is only a frosh... Larranaga has a "good-un" there.

Meh... We'll agree to disagree.
Arch, one of the few times I'll disagree with you!

I just re-watched the first half and the last 90 seconds weren't great, but besides the Miami scoring run it wasn't a disaster either.

Put into context, and looking how the team came out of the gate in the second term and you can see the method to Roy's 'madness'

He's coaching 3 games (hopefully) in 4 days, away from home comforts, he then needs to back his team up for a (hopefully) 6 game stretch over 4 weeks, so giving his best players a breather while up 12 must have seemed like the right move.

As others have mentioned, 7th, Brandon and Tony will all learn from that 90 seconds too, they'll improve and develop, cause that's what Carolina players do. It's what Roy does.

I will say though, I'd like to see Stillman play more than just mop-up minutes at the end.... he could have done with some end-of-first-half time too (and his shot fake is sooo good!)

That was my point Oz. I think he did the right thing by taking Joel and Theo out, Theo had 3 fouls and Joel 2. But call the TO you're going to lose if you don't use, and run clock the rest of the half. Run set plays and emphasize no TO's. IOW, play a very conservative, disciplined last two minutes to preserve the double digit lead.

They needed some coaching up with Joel, Theo, and Nate sitting. I would have had Stilman in at PG too. He is a calming influence, just what was needed.

In watching the recorded game last night, I had already heard about the last 2 mins of first half, and 7th, so I watched him closely while he was in. Some of the stuff he does (at least yesterday) is straight up reckless. Throws some sort of two hand underhand pass (when there is no need), throws a pass behind his head, shoulders, (again no need), seems to close his eyes and drive full speed into a clogged lane until the ball gets stolen. He has shown the ability to play under control, but yesterday wasn't it. Maybe first time in a tourney jitters or over-amped up.

But it scares me to death to think 7th will be the guy running the show, to spell JB, when needed, in crucial, one or two possession games in win-or-go-home scenarios.

I totally think the pecking order for subs at PG should be: Stilman, then Britt, then Seventh. I have almost zero worry about Stilman - or even Britt at this point, freaking out and making dumb turnovers. Not their first rodeo.... their experience is worth a lot. We should use it.

To be fair, he's also shown a handful of really nice moments as well. I'll hold out hope that we see a tremendous amount of growth from his freshman -> sophomore season since that is something I'm accustomed to from guards in our system.

7th had a bad game, but once again he had been playing much better recently and Roy expected it to continue! Second, don't we want him to get over his pressure-cooker type tourney jitters now so he can help us in the real deal staring next week? There must be some reason Roy does not use Stilman in these situations and I bet practice has something to do with it!
