the Beginning of the End for Dook basketball

Easy, top kids are still going to love to go to Duke for that one year. All depends on who fills his shoes. But the talent will still be there.

Hope you are right, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. puke will be fine immediately after he leaves, but the decline could be catastrophic if they choose the wrong successor! (Doh!) Do they have a Roy in the wings? I'm looking forward to seeing if this is really such a great advantage in recruiting. Two classes after he leaves should tell all! When the USA wins another gold he could get another quick bump though.

Capel's gonna be the next head coach and contrary to popular belief, it's Capel, not the Olympics, that's been the big reason for Duke's improved recruiting.

agree ... Capel has been biggest help at Dook and will be next Coach ... He is more crooked than K .. he has been spotted during non-contact periods hiding waiting on certain players ....

I hope that duke feels inclined to move Capel into the head coaching position. Because he's not a big time coach. Hiring him is certainly preferable to hiring an accomplished coach - which duke could do if they wanted. There will be plenty of accomplished coaches interested in that job when it come available.

Yup and I think that's why Oklahoma got rid of him quickly after giving him an extension.....

K is ugly, but not dumb. He is not going anywhere. Did you catch the following in the article? "Hopefully we can finish things up well with Rio and I would move onto something else with USA Basketball"

He will be in the background and still a major influence with USA basketball. It's like when a baseball manager gets kicked out of game but goes in the dressing room and still manages the team from the dressing room. He will get some fancy title and still be a major player in the background.

As far as Duke's next coach, K is not retiring from Duke until he breaks Wooden's record. Regretfully, he will forced to retire at age 95 a discruntled old man without accomplishing it.

Come on man, you KNOW it has been both all the way.

Olympics certainly don't hurt, but Capel is the bigger reason. Capel connects with these recruits better than K was able to do for a while. K's first Olympics was 08, Capel got to Duke in 2011.

Recruiting rankings:
2008 - 17
2009 - 19
2010 - 9
2011 - 2
2012 - 22
2013 - 3
2014 - 1
2015 - 2
2016 - 2

Besides 2012 where they missed some top targets to UCLA and Kentucky, there's been a direct correlation between the recruiting improvement and Capel coming in.

I laugh at the sentence of it being "the end for duke basketball". Anyone who expects them to be consistently bad anytime soon is just not being rational at all.

That's going to be the most sought after job in basketball, they will find another great coach.

USA definitely helps, but Capel is also a big reason as Tra states. He recruited well at Oklahoma, four mcdonald americans I believe? But he also lead Oklahoma to another NCAA investigation

Capel has got Parker, Tatum, GIles, Jeter, Ingram, Tyus and Okafor to all come to duke. Capel was the main recruiter in all those guys. And he is on Wendal Carter and Trent JR

Pretty much correct, BUT how will that message from Capel go when it's "come play for me" instead of "come play for K"?

Exactly. Capel is no K. Not close. The message will not resonate as well after K is gone. Right now, the pitch is, "come play for a legend and have a chance at national title." When K's gone, the message will be, "come play for me...I once hit a halfcourt buzzer beater against the Heels...and still lost." In other words, Capel has accomplished nothing. Kids don't want to roll the dice on a guy that has accomplished nothing.

I pray that duke hires Capel as the head coach.

Those who say that coaches are gonna jump on this job are kidding themselves. The shadow that Vader casts...and he WILL be around lurking in the shadows and clearly looking over the next coaches shoulder.... being the massive egomaniac that he always has been and will be, the EXPECTATIONS of doochies nationwide will be thru the roof. Dook is little more than KY East now OAD u as they churn out NBAers a la KY.

Caple sounds good to me Got the ax at Okie and regardless of his ability to recruit, I think he would do poorly at dook ,which is exactly what I want

I agree, for the most part, but if he can get guys like Blake Griffin to play for him in Oklahoma, I'm pretty sure he can get guys to play for him at Duke.

He connected with them in Oklahoma to but the NCAA had a problem with the way he "connected"...

well on the one hand Calimari is the slimiest coach on planet earth so dook may turn their noses up at him. On the OTHER hand they HAVE covered up the Lance Thomas scam for going on six years now, with nary a word from their faculty and administration so we KNOW that the University CAN and has been run out of the BBALL office.

Actually I was talking about the olympic gig but make no mistake about it, if duke could snag Kalipari duke fans would be thrilled.

If that is true you better get ready for probation.
Still SMH at you dookies trying to downplay the USA Basketball advantage.

He is very high on Duke and if you guys think you have a shot at him you are going to be very very disappointed when he makes his decision.

Screw dook, screw K and screw Capel….who cares! I am more interested in who will become the next USA Coach….Kerr, Brad Stevens, Doc….personally I like Kerr…think he would do a great job for a long time!!!

Second time I've seen you say that, you're literally the only person I've seen say Duke isn't the heavy favorite to land him.

Because Carter is a big UNC guy. He was waiting for an offer and got one. Plans to visit soon. I feel like Trent Jr keeps talking the team up game but not so much coming from Carter...

Respectfully, this may be stretching it a bit. First, getting kids to the NBA is usually a draw and even your coach recruits NBA level talent. Second, of the 3 freshmen that declared for the draft from last year's team, 1 was considered a OAD during his recruitment (Okafor). Winslow was considered a 2 year player at least and Jones was considered a 3-4 year player. As it turns out, the system used last year allowed those 2 to flourish and get to the NBA earlier than they expected.

This year coming up is the first time I recall K recruiting multiple OAD's in one class (Giles and Tatum). Recently, he's recruited one per class with other guys that have been considered multi-year players (Parker, Rivers, Okafor, Ingram, etc.). Even Irving was not considered a OAD when he was recruited.

To say that we are targeting only OADs is not accurate. Sometimes it just clicks with kids earlier than expected.

I almost fell off my chair when you said that Winslow was a 2-year player and Jones a 3-4 four year player. Elizabeth! I'm coming to join you honey!

Jones was definitely supposed to be a multi year guy. Winslow was more than likely a one and done.

Don't see him taking it, but Greg Popvich would be the perfect candidate.
