What is the best possible nap?

I submit: You mow the yard on a nice sunny day, get all the edging and details done, then wash off all the sweat and clippings in the shower along with an ice cold shower beer. Plop down in the hammock in the middle of your freshly groomed kingdom with nothing else to do and no one to bother you for at least an hour. It's the sense of smug satisfaction that puts this nap over the top.

Runner up: You're in college and you've stayed up playing video games with your roommates until the wee hours but you have to go to your 8 o'clock class. Afterward you zombie walk back to the dorm/apartment, step inside the door, and fall face first into your bed. If you're on top of your nap game you tuck your arms under your chest so that they'll fall asleep and start tingling, waking you up just in time to make your 11 o'clock. This nap ranks highly primarily for its dead-to-the-world factor. Your roommate could be testing airhorns and it wouldn't matter.

I am a semi-professional napper.

My best naps came when I first started really upping my running mileage. I would come home from a Saturday morning long run and collapse on the sofa downstairs. I had my first and only case of sleep paralysis during one of those naps. Scared me a bit. I thought maybe aliens had frozen me and were going to start probing and implanting things.

To your point--a nap in a hammock (in the right weather conditions) is awesome!

Here's the best tv episode about a nap

I haven't been able to nap much over the past 11 years because of kids. If the kids are not napping, they're not letting anyone else. And if they are napping, parents are usually trying to maximize the time they have to themselves.

But recently, I've gotten back into napping. My kids are old enough that I'm ok with checking out on a Saturday for an hour or so. The best naps are golf naps. I agree with @JuleZ '02 HEEL that yard work gets me in the mood. But instead of the hammock, I like to get my yard work done by mid afternoon and then it's to the basement on my couch. I turn on whatever run-of-the-mill golf tournament is on and within minutes, I can be asleep. @UNC71-00 mentioned this a week or so ago, but the best part of taking a nap during the front nine is that when you wake up, you probably haven't missed all that much and can easily just start watching again.

i’m currently re-learning how to nap.

i have the power app nap and it’s pretty cool...heavy rain seems to be my wheelhouse noise.

Usually a 20-25 minute nap is all I need. Back in my younger days, when I was working two jobs, I would get home from job 1 and catch a few quick Z's. I would put on a favorite side of an LP (yes, vinyl) and doze off. When it finished, about 25 minutes later, it would wake me up... and I was off to job 2.

I use to have a noise machine with all different settings - rain forest, ocean, summer night, etc. But those noises became more of a hindrance to my sleeping than any help.

Then I got one of these.

It's the greatest sleep aid of all time. No shit. You could drink a 6 pack of Jolt Cola and still fall asleep within 5 minutes after laying down next to this thing. I highly recommend.

$60! Sheeeeeeit. My kids are two and five. You give me 5 minutes and a semi-horizontal position and I could fall asleep anywhere. No noise machine needed.

I know, $60 for basically a small fan. I too thought it was expensive. But now if it broke, I'd pay double for another one. Maybe triple.

The best nap is when you do something that gets you a bit sweaty, whether it be yardwork, exercise, what have you... and then instead of showering and continuing with your day, you plop down on your bed and sleep.

Best nap is between 2-3 hours to me. Definitely anything under an 1hr 1/2 is a wasted time to me. My anxiety takes over and I start counting down the minutes until I get up. Whoever said an after golf nap is spot on. Tee time at 8:00. Get a few drinks in me w lunch. Home and shower. Bam 3 hour nap. Perfect Saturday.

Sadly, I don’t do this often anymore.

Oh and I sleep w a floor fan 24/7/365. Couldn’t imagine sleeping w out it.

Long run naps are the best naps. I have to make sure I shower immediately when I get home because once I hit the couch I'm not getting back up for a few hours at least.

And the shower doubles the effectiveness of the nap. I guess it's the hot water, but it's basically a guarantee that I will be hitting the sofa.

I had a noise maker like you described. I could do waterfall, shower, etc... But, they had one setting called "heart beat." That was the worst thing possible for falling asleep. All it did was make me focus on my own heart beat. And then I started thinking about this thing beating in my chest, controlling my life. Which led to thinking about it stopping. And of course who can fall asleep while thinking about their heart stopping???

How's that 5k time coming along? ;)
Down to 23:05, so still a lot of work to do to get it to 20:00.

I run at least a mile a day, minimum. Need to start working in longer runs, but I just hate it after 25 minutes or so lol. I've been doing exclusively treadmill for now. Running outside is bad for my ego.

No wonder you hate it after 25 minutes if you're running on a treadmill. Go find a trail somewhere

I can't dude. I don't know if it's a mental thing or what, but when I run outside, I cannot go as far or as quickly. I live in quite a hilly area which doesn't help, but still, it's not like I live in Nepal. Running outside shouldn't make that much difference but it does. I can do 3 miles comfortably on a treadmill if I back the speed down. If I try to run 3 miles outside and just try to complete it without stopping (aka not even going for a specific time), I feel like I'm dying halfway through and have to stop.

I don't know. It's weird. Once it officially gets and stays warm here, I'll give outside running another shot. Plus, I run at the beginning or end of my workout at a gym, so the treadmill is convenient.

Doctor put me on a CPAP machine in September so I can't nap now. I get up 430 am and I am up til I go to bed. I used to tilt my head back and be able to go out anywhere. can't do it now though. Feel great though.
