The Carolina mile

Maye is one of those "refuse to lose" guys! Glad we have him.
I've heard nothing but good things about Maye. His conditioning work has been a topic of conversation as well as his play in pickup games. He will get some meaningful minutes this season and be a larger contributor over time.

I so want to be right about him when I said he reminds me of Georges Niang!

5:06. What the hell? That's fast. Real fast.

I read that all but 2 finished up beating their "tuff times", guys putting in the work in the off season. Kennedy Meeks finishing at 6:08 is AMAZING! When he got to UNC you could have got a even money bet that Meeks would not finish the mile in the same day he started it, he could have been timed with a calender ! LOL And now he runs the mile in 6:08 ? CRAZY CRAZY STUFF !!!

Yes. Especially for a big white guy perceived to be unathletic. I ran the 800 , 1600 , 3200 in HS and in the 1600 my best times were just under 5 min. Best time was 4:56 but I was 6'1" 165lbs not 6'7" 225

All our guys puttin' in the work, bodes well for the season. Don't be surprised if Luke plays a major role, perhaps even starts, by his junior year.

I love Maye..but if he's starting at anytime at UNC..means we have taken a major dip in recruiting!!

Very unfair statement to make. How do you know what this young man may become? No way he starts THIS season but by his Jr-Sr year who knows what his skill set will be?

While I do get what Bur is saying, I am not one to limit what a kid can become before he has already had the chance to show anything. Hey, look at the other end of the spectrum, I and many others were really excited when Joel James committed that 6'10" 280lb self to the Heels, history now shows maybe I was to excited. How was the excitement level when guys like Shammond or Hubert became Tar Heels, bet you could have made a real similar statement of how much trouble we would have been in if either of those fellas ever started for us.

How did Forrest Gump put it, life and basketball is like a box of chocolates cause ya never know what ya gonna get...

I'm still excited that we have JJames! How many players play with such joy and put in this much work off and on the court! I think the excitement for this great person will ramp back up during THIS season! I also think Maye will work his way into Tar Heel hearts just like many of our all time faves from past days!

Basically writing off this guy's potential to start before his first season begins is pretty close-minded IMO. He may never be a star but I have learned never to underestimate a person who has heart and a great work ethic. He's already one of my favorites. Of course, my favorite players tend to be players who aren't uber talented but display character and dedication to improving.

...in case anyone forgets how ridiculously athletic top flight D1 kids are.

5 minute miles for guys this big is just absurd. Kennedy running 6 min is also nuts.

Hey..you're right about me not knowing what he will become..but I'm looking at the fact that recruiting should be back up to par after the mess blows over..therefore we should be bringing in top 5 recruits..and 9 times out of 10,these types of kids are already better than what's already on the roster!!...that's the reason for my statement..trust me, l hope maye is good enough to start this year..I'm just going with the more likely to happen situation!!

I'll get excited about Luke Maye if his first shot is 3-pointer, nothing but net. Otherwise, I will go with Scarlett O'Hara's famous quote in the final scene of the best movie ever "Gone With The Wind"..."I'll think about that tomorrow".

Our boys have put the time in, I know this is useless banter.but...Meeks needs to be commended man, what a commitment from a young man to help Carolina get back to the FF

But here is my question, has Meeks worked as much on his game as he has his body? That is one of my un-answered questions going in to this season. Not dumping on the kid but I literally do not know what we have in Meeks right now. I got really concerned in the second half of last season, there was some kind of mystery injury or sickness or something that just seemed to limit Meeks, he was not nearly the same player he was earlier season. I have never seen any indication of exactly what it was, almost as if nothing was wrong but something just was not right with the kid. He seemed physically weaker after that initial flu bug hit him, as if he never really kicked that flu bug.

Clearly he now seems, based on the look test to be in the best shape of his life, his stamina based on that Carolina Mile seems to be great, really want to see how this translates on the court.

This is quote season and being the pessimistic one I will quote Allen Averson concerning Meeks no nonsense pre-season physique.

" Practice! We talkin about practice!
