"The Georgia Bulldogs and North Carolina Tar Heels renew an old rivalry on the football field September 3 in Atlanta, but the rivalry and similarities between these border-state universities go back to the 18th Century.

The University of Georgia, the “First State Chartered University”, was founded in 1785. The University of North Carolina also claims to be the first state chartered university, as UNC was chartered in 1789 but graduated its first class in 1799, six years before Georgia’s first graduating class.

Both schools have two of the most picturesque campuses in the country and are situated in arguably the best college towns in America; Athens and Chapel Hill. Even the topography of each campus is similar— rolling hills filled with gardens and abundant oak and pine trees situated in the northern region of each state.

Georgia and Carolina were charter members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference, formed in 1894. Both schools left the conference in 1921 and were charter members of the new Southern Conference. Georgia left the Southern in 1932 as a founding member of the SEC and North Carolina departed for the newly-formed ACC in 1953."
