Here be dragons
How have I not ever heard of the Voynich manuscript? And where did I even come across it today? I'm not even sure what page I saw it mentioned on, but I just looked up and realized I'd spent half an hour reading about it.

The Chappelle Theory. If you haven't already checked that out, do it. It's oddly interesting.
There's an episode of 30 Rock where Tracy Morgan's character is on the run from the Black Crusaders, whose heads are Bill Cosby and Oprah. I know know they were referencing this theory, which is pretty crazy.

Whether or not the Chappelle theory is true, I wish that show had lasted longer than it did. It was pretty hilarious.

I read about it years ago. Interesting to say the least...If you would like to learn more go here http://www.crystalinks.com/voynich.html
This is fascinating. Well written summary, too (although I admit I haven't finished it yet).

Several references to cipher early in the article. If anyone finds that kind of stuff interesting, check out "The Imitation Game". Great movie. Sorry, that's a movie rabbit hole and not an internet rabbit hole.

ETA: Here's a lighter hearted rabbit hole that has appeared on OOTB before. Total time-waster but quality fun: https://www.geoguessr.com/

So if you search YouTube for the Voynich Manuscript, you'll find a BBC production about it. Runs about 58 minutes and change. I watched it last night and it's absolutely fascinating. They spend a good deal of time tracing the history of the book's origins and telling Voynich's personal story. They also interview several folks from different backgrounds -- cryptographers, herbalists, families of those who have studied the book -- to get their perspectives.

Some of the interviewees are more compelling than others.
One of the guys they interview is from North Carolina. He's not an expert in anything, really, but is convinced one of the diagrams in the manuscript is the Milky Way, so without any other evidence whatsoever he concludes that the manuscript originated from aliens. Ugh.
It's interesting to see certain biases play out, and of course you're left not knowing anything more about the book's meaning than when you started.

One other fun thing. Every time they introduce an interviewee, his/her name appears in cipher first before they reveal his/her real name. The cipher is actually pretty simple but I won't say anything else and ruin it. Anyway, if this book and its story piqued anyone's curiosity I recommend watching the BBC video.

Maybe this should be re-named The Nerd Thread. Or the Intellectual Curiosity Thread if we're being self-aggrandizing about it.

I came across this site a few weeks ago and think it's fascinating. It's an extremely detailed look at the imports and exports of every country in the world. The interactive visualizations make it more compelling than you might think. Try clicking the different "depth" settings to zoom in/out on the details for each category.

So I only heard about this site because Zillow sued them for using pictures off of Zillow (most of which are cribbed from real estate listings and other sites anyway), a suit which has now apparently been dropped. But now I may be reading it for a while.

I was reading a completely unrelated article about net-zero homes (go ahead, it's its own rabbit hole) when lo and behold, the top story on whatever site I was reading was about using artificial intelligence to crack the Voynich Manuscript. Here's the source article from the University of Alberta.
