The latest former Saban assistant

Hopefully UNC can do better than a coach cutting his teeth at UL-Laf, no matter how successful, and no matter his ties to Saban. And though Saban had plenty of chances, he never promoted him to OC at Bama. The black mark on him is that he is one of the few folks that Dabo has run off at CU when he was the OC there when Dabo was in his first couple of years. All that being said, he would probably be better than Fedora. Nobody noticed, as UNC bailed him out just in time, but he ran Southern Miss in the ground with his lack of recruiting after he looked good for a couple years with the previous regimes recruits. That program still hasn't recovered. Now that State seems to have taken the upper hand as far as in state recruiting, the same thing may be happening in Chapel Hill. Of course then again it all comes down to what the powers that be want. Do they want to compete with the Clemson's and Flordia States of the world, or are they fine with being in some mediocre bowl most years and waiting on basketball to bring home the glory?

That’s a strange criticism considering Fedora’s recruiting classes at Southern Miss didn’t look remarkably different than the years before and after his tenure. One good year, one bad year, but overall relatively consistent.

Now I know many will rush you his defense, but look at the two coaches that succeeded him, and the struggles they had. Now that says one of two things. Either Fedora was a miracle worker, a genius on the sidelines ( though one would figure that would have spilled over in Chapel Hill and UNC would be amongst the elite), or the cupboard at Sou Miss was bare.

I'm not defending Fedora, I'm poking holes in specious reasoning. There are dozens of reasons teams succeed or fail: recruiting, player development, execution, strength & conditioning, Xs and Os, game preparation, in-game adjustments, culture, level of competition, injuries, bad luck, etc. Pointing to one cause as "the" reason a team did poorly is lazy, especially in the face of evidence that suggests otherwise.

Not that I am advocating for this coach but I think this mentality "Hopefully UNC can do better than a coach cutting his teeth at UL-Laf, no matter how successful, and no matter his ties to Saban." has caused some harm and our football program misses out. There isn't a person on this planet that follow college football that didn't say "Dabo who?". Although Butch's tenure was cut short, I think for the money, it was not a great return on investment. I was expecting more than 8 win seasons. Maybe if given time, more 9-10 win seasons would have come. I say all of this to say, if and/or when a change happens, UNC should look to a coach that wants to be here and that have a proven winning record regardless of program classification. In another tread JMU's Mike Houston was identified as a coach that looks at UNC as his dream job. His record speaks for itself. If something does happen, I hope they have him on speed dial. Until then, I fully support CF.
