The Magnificent 7

7 schools including UNC exploring ways out of the ACC. Lawyers trying to get out of the GoR.
This has been going on for years. No lawyer has found a way to break the GoR. It is unlikely they ever will. But every year the same journalists will use it for clickbait.

The ACC is set through 2036. At which point the valuable schools (big football programs and/or big public universities with large alumni bases) will go to the B1G or SEC. The leftover schools (including dook) will scramble to find a home in a conference making a fraction of what the two super conferences make on their new TV deal. This will essentially end the UNC/dook rivalry.

And after the SEC and B1G have maxed out what they can get from TV contracts, there is only one logical move next to satiate their greed. They will break away from the NCAA and form their own postseason basketball tournament. The NCAA currently keeps 83% of NCAA tournament revenue, while splitting 17% amongst all conferences. That's a lot of money the B1G and SEC can make if they break away.

There's an idea that is going around that if they could get one more school, then there would be enough schools to dissolve the ACC, which means the GofR wouldn't apply. Those teams would then grab a couple of teams to form a new conference with a greater per school payout. Of course, that requires an agreement between the schools not to bolt the new conference and a media partner willing to pay up. Interesting idea, but probably unlikely to happen.

That isn’t greed. If the NCAA deserves that big of a cut their tourney will remain superior right?

Everything is driven by greed. Every expansion movement has been driven by greed for a bigger tv contract. Every school that has sacrificed their rivalries did so out of greed. Every conference that added a school on the other side of the country, forcing athletes (especially Olympic sports) to deal with insane travel, did so out of greed.

And that greed isn't going to stop once the B1G and SEC have collected all the valuable schools. They will always want more. "Why should we split 17% of NCAA tournament revenue with 351 division 1 teams every year, when we can split 100% of a B1G/SEC postseason tournament among 40 or so teams?"

By 2036 we'll probably be in the B1G. Our rivalry with dook, and probably every other old school ACC team except Virginia, will be ruined. And shortly thereafter we'll start playing in the new postseason tournament against Kentucky, UCLA, Indiana, Michigan State, Texas, and the other schools that were lucky enough to be part of the two super conferences. No more midmajors, no more cindarella magic, most of what made March Madness special gone forever. But we will be rolling in cash. While dook, UConn, Gonzaga, and Kansas are cutting sports to keep their athletic department afloat, we'll be building a new football stadium with a Dome and getting private jets to take all our athletes to away games.

I hope you are wrong and we head to the SEC if it all comes to fruition. Jmo of course

Well there are heavy political forces that aren't going to let UNC go anywhere unless State gets a seat at the table. So factor that into the equation too.

I’m down like four flat tires. We can beat ‘em regardless what conference we are in. I’d just like to be able to see UNC play at several schools close to me. Lol

I wouldn’t think so either but idk.
There's only so much room at the table. The Big won't be interested in moo and the SEC doesn't want them because they don't add much. Both those conferences are projected to get 100 million per team during their new contract. Moo doesn't have that value and the money people aren't going to keep us in a dying conference just because moo can't get in somewhere else.

lol @ Basketboomers!

I do lament the dying of tradition! I don't think the world is any more evil than it used to be, but there is a clear assault on some of the things once held dear! The ACC is a conference I grew up watching, enjoying, and counting on. (60 years of joy is hard to release) I don't want to see it die and I don't want the bottom line to be the driving force! I once thought there would never be a day that someone was a bigger rival than Moo U, but puke/ratty came along so change happens! BUT I fully understand the world we live in and completely understand those who want UNC to grab that payday! Ultimately, I will support UNC as long as I possibly can no matter what conference they are in!

ACC made their security of conference ironclad, but they did so with the literal worst TV contract ever. Definitely a huge blunder.

That's 20/20 vision, though. At the time it was seen as a great move because it kept the conference together after the turtles left. No one predicted that teams would end up with contracts that paid out $100 million per school.

I am very well sourced on this topic (have been for a couple of years) and lay it out on the premium board. I'd say 99.9% of what it out there has no basis in reality and isn't sourced. ALL of my information is exceptionally sourced. Go over there to get the facts.

I hope you are both wrong and the ACC can survive as a Major comnference.

I do believe that for that to happen, the ACC must reorganize, which means cutting loose schools that don not have proven TV fan bases. That starts with Wake. It almost certainly includes BC. It may well include Syracuse.

Get rid of the deadest weight in terms of loyal fan bases, and the ACC per game numbers will be sound even in football. That plays a couple off key additions made for football, including adding passionate fans and a new state that is football obsessed, plus a new basketball tournament restricted to perhaps the 1A/FBS league, could do the financial tricks we require.

I kind of see it as UNC is playing both sides of the deck and they should. I do think if given what they prefer that UNC would prefer the ACC remain as a viable conference and not be forced to go elsewhere. I as well think that UNC will have a game plan in place if they get to the point of believing the ACC just can not stay together. IF the ACC can not stay together, I realize the major revenue sports fans will prefer the SEC and UNC is the plum the SEC wants, the flag ship program in North Carolina, a huge college sports market. Florida for example is great but that is more a pro sports market, as is both Boston and NY, Pittsburg as well but Penn st has the rest of that Penn market.

You do have to realize, the non-revenue sports, the Olympic sports, fits much better in the Big10 than the SEC and those sports have a LOUD voice at UNC. Natural rivals however fit the SEC much better in the major revenue sports, geographically UNC seems to just fit the SEC better, much easier venues to travel to. OTH I do think UVa and ND would be more drawn to the Big 10. Of course there is no question of where Miami, FSU, or Clemson want to go, that is easy SEC if the SEC wants them. Do think some of the luster has faded from Miami and FSU and the SEC already has Florida's flag ship program.

IN the end I suspect the ACC survives but for that to happen they are going to have to have leadership from the ACC offices in getting a more reasonable and fore looking deal with TV revenues than what they now have. They are going to have to play hard ball with ESPN and mean it when they say if we don't get a better deal we will disband the league, they don't have much choice because things can not go along like they are until 2036.

I have addressed this thoroughly on the other boards, and will have a column coming out this week about it. But I will say here with absolute certainty that the money people near unanimously want the SEC and not the Big Ten, if it ever comes to that.

Of course they do. That is semi-pro football and football is where the revenue is at. No conference is close to what the SEC currently has with its caliber of football.

I would agree with this, but no one is getting kicked out. You might have a slim chance of forcing someone out through unequal shares, but probably not. The only way you could do something like that would be through a new conference formation. And the chances of that happening are slightly above zero. It's interesting to think about, though.
