I sat and watched the Butler game like everyone else but the one thing that jumped out at me was there was never one replay made of any officials call, and there were (what looked like) some very questionable calls. If you're going to have a fair tournament you have to have consistent officiating and there is nowhere close to consistent calls in these games. It's almost come to the point where the officials will determine the outcome .. big shock huh.

I was gonna start a thread on the Hicks reputation and how it is KILLING him and us
Look I GET he does not play the best positional defense

I GET THAT OK

BUT my God watch the tapes .... on 2 occasions He BARELY and l mean BARELY touches a guy driving to the hoop and is called for two fouls.... eventually fouls out.

His rep precedes him and the zebras have an Eagle eye out for any contact that may occur however slight and meaningless.
he gets ZERO breaks

You are correct, from his freshman year he gets no love from the refs. Some guys get tagged and it follows them their entire career. Hicks is one of them.

And in all fairness .. in the first half it looked like every UNC big man forgot the principle of vertical defense .. but after playing the game against Arkansas I can see how they lost focus. That's why I posted this. One would think when you get to this level of play the refs could have a "practice" where they could be consistent across all games .. but with the amount of $$ involved it aint happening.

Butler seemed to specialize in that lower back shove to move Tar Heels out of their better, solidly established rebound position. On one play two Butler dudes shoved out Jackson and Meeks in unison. Looked like some sort of oddball ballet for a minute there. Don't even get me started on the travel calls/no calls.:p

No there is no conspiracy ........Just observing the reality of how games are called , especially with Hicks

What is this "conspiracy" attempting to create and/or limit? Is it supposed to prevent Carolina from winning? Help me understand.

Perhaps the "conspiracy" can be chalked up to confirmation bias. Example: the consensus on this board was the refs were bad in the Arkansas game but specifically were bad in Arkansas's favor. Meanwhile, the rest of America thinks the refs screwed Arkansas at the end, not Carolina.

Confirmation bias.

1. College officiating is well below the level of competency.

2. Most of the officials are too old and the game is too fast.

3. Officials are lazy. They will call fouls on guys (Hicks) who are known for fouling and not call fouls on teams who are known to play tough defense.

4. Officials are human and have teams and coaches that they admire/like. This is not a conspiracy , it's called human nature..

Officiating is bad in general. Overall I think it's been a wash for us in terms of helping and hurting us at different times. The lack of consistency is what is tough to watch.

Specific to Hicks, please stop with the conspiracy theories on him. Last night only 1 of his fouls were questionable. The other 4 were absolute fouls. He reached over the back when the other guy had box out position, he literally Hip checked a big shooting a jump hook, he grabbed a guys arm on a missed box out, etc.

Saying refs, in general, aren't very good is a far cry from calling it a conspiracy.

You're right though, they're not always good at their job. Examples include the missed Meeks tip on Arkansas's 3-pointer, and the awful call a minute or so before that when one of the Arkansas guards cleanly stripped the ball from Berry (?) in the back court and they called it a hacking foul. See how that works? We get some calls and we have some calls go against us.

Not disputing your point , but probably most of America (at least 51% probably much greater) were pulling against UNC in the Arky game. I don't know if you ever go on ESPN game chats , but you would be surprised at the venom for Carolina even when they weren't involved in the game or even the topic. It is inevitable that some douche bag will bring up the UNCheats BS out of thin air.

No, I value my brain cells too much

Not surprising at all. Most folks hate UNC. It stems from five decades of us dominating in basketball and from five decades of (some) of our fans and PTB acting too holier-than-thou.

I know a sub-segment will always cry wolf when we win, but the calls I referenced were just bad and there's no defending the refs missing those. In fact, when a ref misses a call so badly like the steal I mentioned, it plays into the popular thinking that the blue bloods get all the calls when the game is tight.

I could not agree more. I just don't think the NCAA or the refs are intelligent enough to plan or pull off a conspiracy.
Exactly!!

Has officiating ever been good? Was it good when the game was slower pre shot clock with mainly half court sets and the refs could focus? Is the nature of the game and the speed and athleticism too much for officials to keep up with and effectively monitor? Maybe add an official?
