Theo Pinson return will be a big lift to the Heels.

So the timeframe is still end of December, dangit....I'm waiting to hear something on JBII as well....the sooner we get them both back the better.

Like Shun, Smooth is always upbeat too. Love that about both of them.
Hi Archer2, SMILE....I know that GOD LOVES YOU, as I do. SMILE

!!!!!!!!!!!! GO TAR HEELS !!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to ask you what you do in public life.

Love both posters!

TP is a swiss army knife type. He is an asset on the bench and a difference maker on the court. Put both guys back in our rotation and we become really hard to deal with!

I worry that we're expecting too much from Theo.

He has yet to prove he can be a successful starter, can maintain focus for more than a few minutes at a time, or can score more than 5 points a game.

Sure, we all believe he can do those things. And Roy said he would have started, so he presumably believes it, too. But we've never seen it and now he'll be playing catchup.

So let's not get too giddy OK?

Well.. compared to most of our current options hes a big upgrade and as I said in another thread the guy was a top 15 recruit who has been plagued by injuries and whos potential is through the roof. Lets just say our ceiling without him is much more limited than with him playing at or near his potential, and I think you know this. Hes a huge piece of this puzzle to be missing.

I heard more than one announcer say they thought we were the best team in the country when we dominated the Maui Invitational, and that was without Theo. So I think it's okay to be excited about what we can be with him healthy. Don't forget that our small lineup was possibly our most effective lineup at the end of last year. He's our most versatile defender. So I'm excited to add him to our rotation.

I built houses, did tree work, worked in the car rental business and then ran a chain of coin operated laundromats. IOW, jack of all trades and master of none. I'm semi-retired now due to a bad back and bad knees.
Hi Archer2, thanks, you show that you were a very active person and showed a lot of initiative. I want to wish you prayers in your recovery with your physical condition. May GOD BLESS you and the ones you love. SMILE

I agree, Theo coming back will be a huge lift for us, he like Joel seems to have that innate ability to get his mates to ratchet up their intensity and as with Joel I think he does so more on the defensive side than the offensive side. With both Theo and Joel, our defense seems to ignite our offense. That as opposed to guys like Brice or Ty that their defense had to be ignited by their offense. Old saying, offense can come & go but defense is usually always there so I love the way Theo and Joel go about it. Note, see some of that in Kenny as well...

Oh yes, I'm excited at the prospect of having him back, too. But I fear we're drinking too much of our own Kool Aid. It may be a while before we get the Theo we were expecting to see before the injury.

First step is getting cleared for unrestricted practice. Has that happened yet?

I believe he will come back to try to win a title, and in the process do himself a disservice (by not redshirting). He will not be 100% this year and will likely only be able to provide spot minutes, based on my experience with these injuries. I hope he is an exception though!

Couldn't agree more. His ability to swing down, defend the four spot, and allow us to utilize an ultra athletic small ball lineup is what excites me most. That is our best defensive team, and that kind of defense combined with our offensive ability, makes us quite good, perhaps good enough to return to the Final Four. And once you get there, anything can happen.

From everything I'm reading, he's ahead of schedule. We have a good chance to cut down the nets this year so I think Theo wants to be an integral part of that, and who can blame him? And there are a ton of games left to play, so even though it may take him a few games to get his game legs back, I'm all for seeing him get back in the saddle as soon as the docs feel it's safe.

I would not be shocked to see him for maybe about 5mins either on the 30th or the GT game.

To me he is that one energy player that will help get his teamates fired up.His defense will really help the Heels out alot
normally i'm concerned about chemistry issues when a starter returns mid-season, but we are badly in need of athleticism in the back court so i agree with you 100%.

I would be surprised if he returned that early. This excerpt from an article on KIH makes me think it will still be a couple of weeks before he makes an appearance. But who knows?

In early December, doctors examined the injured foot to see how his recovery was coming along and to determine what the next step in his rehabilitation would be. “If the x-ray looks good, a CT scan would follow later in the week,” Pinson said. “And if that looks good, it’s on and rolling,”

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Roy Williams said that Pinson would undergo a CT scan early next week to see if it shows more healing and to further assess the situation.

“He jogged six feet and jogged back six feet and then smiled at me,” Williams said as he laughed.

Agreed. However, it will be "safe" long before it is no longer painful.

I agree Theo can bring that spark that Heels need defensively but I am still not sold on his offense as of yet. Kenny Williams except for the Radford game does not seem like he wants to shot much so maybe Theo can change that.

I would agree if Pinson is hypothetically a 35% 3 point shooter.

We're 309th in the country in percentage of points coming from the 3. (23.7%)

Of the top 10 teams in the KenPom ratings, only Kentucky is at our level. There are others that are near (Louisville, WVU) but of teams that we probably consider as national title contenders, it's us and Kentucky who are the most dependent on 2 point shots.

In today's basketball, that just isn't a good formula. We were better last year and used the same formula. But since we're not as good this year, we need to be more proficient from the perimeter.

Pinson will be a lift. He improves our depth. In theory, Nate can play a little less (hopefully). He seems like a born leader... But he's probably a 30% 3-point shooter?

Again, we'll be better... Not sure we'll be substantially better. But I'm greatly looking forward to him returning. He seemed like he was in for a big year and hopefully it isn't lost for him.

ID buddy, I am not sold on Theo shooting from the 2 spot either, and hear this from the guy that spent all summer wanting Kenny to start at the 2. I still like Kenny more at the 2 than Theo but I like Theo more there than anyone other than kenny.

Reason, we just watched a game where we got 2 points from our 2 guard position and yet we scored 100. I would go out on a limb and say we will not lose another game where we score 100 in the next 5 yrs, I may stretch it to 10 if we score 100 and not get but 2 points from our 2 guard position. The message there is clearly we do not need a ton of points from our 2 guard spot to score 100, no need to speculate when the proof is there. Kenny, I felt would give us much more offense but truth is what we are getting from kenny is more as a defender and glue guy than and explosive scorer. Yeah, I know, Monk just rolled us for 47 and kenny was his primary defender but there is no one that can do more than speculate if Theo would have held him to any fewer points, the dude was white hot.

I would say this, if we have a Kenny/Theo rotation at the 2, opposing 2 guards are going to have a tuff night against us. That may not be fact but it is what I strongly believe. This much I do know, if we can get out on break ops and Theo is sweet on those fast break ops, he does not have to shoot a strong trey % to put points on the board or get it to guys that will.

Actually do believe that Theo will also help with the smaller lineup at times. He can actually play the 1-4 spots so indeed yes he will help in terms of depth personified...

Pinson for UNC is a lot like what Igoudala is for the Warriors. Doesn't score a lot but does all the team intangibles really well and possesses a lot of versatility. Would of been nice to have him last Saturday to throw at Monk for at least 20 min of the game.
