True freshman quarterback Chazz Surratt has been getting some work in with the 2s in recent weeks. Surratt didn’t arrive until the mid-summer but has made quite an impression. He passed early enrollee Logan Byrd in August, his presence played a role in impacting Caleb Henderson’s decision to transfer, and now he is sharing reps with Nathan Elliott. Surratt has not yet played in a game, though he has dressed for all of them. The plan is to redshirt him if possible, but an injury to Mitch Trubisky or Elliott would change things, obviously.

On a hoops note, Roy Williams was at a recent football practice and chatted with Larry Fedora about Surratt’s interest in playing basketball. That was part of UNC’s sales pitch to the lefthanded QB the night before he flipped from Duke to UNC in June, 2015. Williams called Surratt and offered him a walk-on spot on the basketball team. Surratt still wants to play hoops, so expect him to be a part of the basketball program at some point this season.
