THI is looking for someone interested in either becoming a sportswriter or exploring the possibility of working in this field to join our staff as a paid intern for the 2016-17 athletic year. This person will learn various aspects of sports writing and and the industry, and they will be mentored by me.
I am entering my 21st year in this profession and have covered all four major pro sports, but mostly have focused on ACC football and basketball, with a heavy concentration on the North Carolina schools. I was with a daily newspaper in the NY Times chain for 10 years working in all aspects in the sports department, including as the ACC writer and columnist. I then worked with a national start up as a columnist and radio show host, was a columnist. My next stop was with FOXSports.com where I covered the Carolina Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and sometimes Charlotte Bobcats (yes, Bobcats) with a heavy focus on the ACC while positioned in the Research Triangle. I am currently finishing my second year as publisher of Tar Heel Illustrated.
I have also hosted my own radio show in various markets for half of my career and co-hosted for longer, and even was a regular as the "ACC Expert" on a weekly college football TV show on FOX.
I also have experience mentoring some people who have had considerable success, including here in the Research Triangle market.
This is an intern position, but I want those working for me to be professionals, and what makes a professional is compensation, so this person will be compensated, though not much. This is a terrific opportunity for someone to learn a ton, have some amazing experiences, and even get something at the end of each month while learning.
If you know of someone who might be interested in this please have them contact me at ARJscribe@gmail.com. They should include a resume, no matter how brief, a cover letter stating why they are interested in this, and include a few writing samples or links to their work if they have any. It is not required that they have clips or links of any work. All candidates will be considered.
Thank you,
- Andrew Jones
