THI Podcast: Cormac Ryan Or Matthew Cleveland A Better Fit For UNC?

My takeaway is that both can play either wing but Cleveland may be physically better at SF where our need is greatest.

If When Cadeau comes, we'll have RJ, Wilcher and Dunn vying for minutes at SG - with RJ presumably getting the lion's share, and still getting 30+ mpg, whether all at SG or split between PG and SG.

Neither of these guys is coming without the strong expectation if not guarantee of starting or, at the least, playing starter minutes. I mean, why would they?

Which means, if we take Cormac Ryan, we are pretty much locking ourselves into being a small-ball, 3-guard team the bulk of the time. And while we probably want a small ball option to be strong component of our arsenal, do we really want to be locked into it?

Simple answer is NO, we should not get locked in to small ball being our primary look! Great look to switch in to to throw the other team off balance but not a good idea at all to go to it as our base look.

Cleveland for.me.because we need a 3. Cadeau + RJ OR RJ + Wilcher have the 1 &2 on lock.

Cadeau, RJ, Cleveland, Withers, Bacot is a strong team with a deep, versatile, and skilled bench! RJ, Wilcher, Cleveland, Withers, Bacot is not exactly a drop off!

I think Dunn's PT was more as the 3 in a small ball look, being behind BOTH RJ and Wilcher at the 2, there just is not much time there behind those 2 but Wojik and now Ryan are direct assaults on those Dunn minutes at the 3, does this push Dunn in to the portal? Right now looks like that starting wing spot would go to Ryan and very likely Wojik as his primary back up. Dunn has very little PT over his 2 seasons with us and next season doesn't look any better. What if Hubert were able to also add either Ingram or Cleveland it would be either go to the portal or join blue steel, he would go to the portal.

That's pretty much the way it looks to me, too.

Part of Dunn's calculation may be that this bottom-of-the-barrel position is only for 1 year.
  • Wojcik has only 1 year.
  • Ryan has only 1 year.
  • If we get Ingram, he has more years, but do we expect him to stay for more than a year?
  • If Wilcher doesn't get good PT, he'll probably pull a Nickel/Kessler. While if he does, he might go pro.
So in a year, Dunn could be competing for a starting slot. That could be enough reason to gut it out. Improve this year, regardless of PT, and be ready to step up. He could be our next Brandon Robinson.

OTOH, if we add Dunlop or Cleveland - and I still hope we do add Cleveland - I'm not sure I can come up with a rationale for Dunn to stay. Which makes me sad.

I just don't see Dunn waiting for his senior season to "maybe" get decent PT off the bench. He is just to much of a talent for that when there are a LOT of programs he could go to now and start next season. As hard as it would be for me, if he were my son I would have to tell him we have to look elsewhere son, you have to be at a place where you can play and it does not look like UNC can give you that. How did that great English poet say it "you don't always get what you want, you get what you need (Mick Jagger)".

Hard to argue. We'll probably find out fairly soon.
