THI Podcast: Discussing Cade Tyson Entering the Portal

There's a lot of stuff about "handling of these guys" that's been coming up throughout the offseason. I tend not to care about that so much since the players are willfully accepting money now. But if that's such an issue, is the staff making it a priority to maybe bring in guys with the right DNA?

Idk, maybe I'm old school in this regard, but that sounds like a softness criticism to me.

Tyson was a colossal flop, and it didn't appear that the coaching staff was prepared in case he didn't work out the way they thought he would.

Tyson is a big time mid-major player. He is the type of guy in a NCAA tournament game will shockingly hit 5 threes and kill a major team.

This is about playing time, and Carolina just can't afford to promise Cade anything. 2-3 inches taller and Cade is a legit stretch 4, as of now he is a slow wing.

What we do not know is why he was a colossal flop. UNC was not just blind in wanting him. He had many Major conference offers. And it is easily possible that if he had gone elsewhere, that staff might have been able to produce a guy who looked good much of the time.

Possibly, but we don’t know definitively. If he goes to another P5 team and excels then that argument gains some credence.

true. coming from a lower division the size and quickness of defenders is a tough adjustment. some shooters adjust, some don't. it will be interesting to see how cade does at his new school. he seems like a nice guy and I wish him well.

That is a reach. There becomes a point that we have to embrace the portal. I stated years ago that college basketball was going into the direction of AAU basketball teams. I stand by that statement. With that comes allot of Cade Tyson players coming and going. Cade is looking for his best opportunity to play. Our incoming freshman Wilson and Portal players are likely better than Cade.

Head man has to take the rap, but this was a reach to blame on Hubert.

And that is what a Major conference coaching staff is supposed to do well: help both freshman adjust from HS and transfers from Mid-Majors adjust to Major conference play.

Tyson is 6-7, and every team can use at floats one guy taller than 6-5 who can nail 3s. Tyson might still be that for some Major conference team, or he might go back to smaller conference and be what he was at that level before coming to UNC. Or he might now be like a football place kicker of golf putter who has gotten his head messed up so that he never really delivers again.

Regarding your last sentence, I’ll just disagree & leave it at that.

Arch, let's look at what we do know concerning Tyson. We know he can score, he did so at Belmont, in fact he played at Belmont like he was a main cog of the team, like the straw that stirs the drink. His jump shooting was strong at Belmont but his game was not limited to just jump shooting, he was the guy, he was that guy, he led from the front. When he entered he portal you could not find a sports media person that was not heaping praise on the kid, best shooter in the portal, the next guy in the spot light.

Tyson then gets to UNC with his bank account looking really sweet, in pick up word is he was scorching the nets causing expectations to quickly ramp up. Exhibition games start and he does not shoot well, goes from starter to the bench. Effort was put in by our staff to get this kid in games, plays were run specifically to get him shots, those shots were not falling. It got to the point that Tyson became a B-team fixture in practice and yet in practice word is he was scorching the nets. Hubert kept giving the kid chances to play, kept putting in plays specifically designed to get the kid open shots and the kid kept missing them. He scored well vs American and LaSalle, teams on the level of his former team at Belmont but vs ACC level teams he was MIA.

With those facts staring at you it does not take a Dr of Psychology degree to understand what the problem was, he could not handle the bright spot light of games at our level. It wasn't a lack of ability it was all about what he believed, in his mind. As Nepoleon Hill shared, "what the mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve". It is all in what you believe, you are the author of your own story, you write the beginning and the end, don't like the ending you have now, just re-write it. Easy to say, much harder to do.

Dr Norman Vincent Peale said, "trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism". There you have what happened with Cadeau as a bonus.
