This is what could derail Taggart

I wouldn't say that. There's rumors that Urban Meyer left in part due to the Zach Smith controversy. If off field issues can impact his job, it can definitely do the same for Taggert.
And this Oregon mess is the Maryland mess save that, thankfully, nobody died. But 2 claim permanent damage. That surely is a problem for FSU. If any workout there leads to anything more than normal fatigue, FSU will be doubly wide open for lawsuits, because FSU hired Taggart and his S&C coach from Oregon.

Has a baseline for normal fatigue been set? What is normal fatigue?

That's where the lawyers come in - hence lawsuits, and universities are terrified of them.

It is possible that what happened at both Maryland and Oregon were truly tragic accidents, meaning no coach or trainer should have been fired. The first ruling at Maryland may have been correct, with the firing being a response to hysteria over the death made worse by race (white coach, black player).

It also is possible both cases may be due to terrible, unjustifiable, decisions made by trainers who were doing what the HCs knew about and approved. If indeed 2 Oregon players suffered debilitating injuries that will harm them for life from 1 work out, then most people will assume that workout was at best excessive to the point of abuse. Climate should play a role in any conclusion. The weirdness of humidity in 'the south' (which area includes the lower midwest, as well as Maryland) means it is easily possible for workouts to be reasonable and yet somebody die. I imagine all of us know someone who has done hard exercise and manual labor out doors and had a major heat stroke or two. I know at least 3 such people who all say that their worst heat stroke was not from doing the hardest work out in the worst weather, but for them from fairly normal physical activity in hot, humid weather, that was normally hot for the South during summer. Meaning they had done that much physical work out hundreds of days at least that hot and humid, before and since, with no heat stroke at all.

But Oregon fairly near the coast? No weird humidity factors are involved.

The lawsuits in OR will be a big deal. FSU will have to pay close attention to the process.

It's just a bad look for the school, especially after dealing with the Jameis issues and now hiring Kendall Briles who is connected to one of the biggest scandals in the history of college football.

Kendall Briles worked at 2 colleges after his con ection no one even batted an eye about the hire in the media

First off, he worked at Florida Atlantic and Houston since the Baylor job. Neither of those schools bring anywhere close to the same level of media scrutiny a major football program in a Power 5 school would. Second, neither of those schools has a recent history of controversies surrounding their star QB and a subsequent alleged coverup by the coaching staff and even as far as the Tallahassee PD.

So they have those issues, a new head coach getting sued into the stone ages by multiple players at his formal school alleging abuse that caused permanent damage while the incidents at Maryland are still in everyone's mind. And oh yeah, a newly hired tied closely to the Baylor fiasco.

Call me crazy, but nothing about this is good for them.
