Thought you guys would enjoy this story.

Some of you know that I was in Utah on vacation last week. While I was there I hiked some really cool slot canyons in the southern part of the state. Here's a picture from inside one of the canyons:

When I got back from the trip, I was talking to my mom on the phone, telling her how cool it was. I told her I'd send her a picture to give her an idea what it was like. I sent her the same picture you see above. I even captioned it: "Here's a slot canyon along Wire Pass trail in southern Utah."

And here's her response:

"Oh, yucky. If I hadn't seen a copy of one of my own recently, I wouldn't have known what that was. Looks a lot better than mine did. Glad it's over with until the next time. Love you, Mom"

In case you haven't figured it out yet, my mom thinks I sent her a picture from a colonoscopy.

Haha.

My mom, while a brilliant woman in many respects, is quite the dingbat at times. That's totally something she would have said. This resonates.

On another note, when I saw this thread it was right next to the thread about Playboy not having naked pics anymore. And for the briefest of moments, I kind of put the two threads together. So it was something like, "No more naked pics courtesy of my mom".

Was that what they call "The Narrows" in Utah? That's a bucket list item for me. With my luck, though, the creek would rise while I'm in there and wash me away...

The Narrows is in Zion National Park, a few hours from there. It's a much, much wider canyon although does fill up during heavy rains. It's the side canyons off the Narrows -- the so-called "slot" canyons -- that are so dangerous. Because they're much narrower, the water levels can rise very quickly and create extremely strong currents. When that happens, there's simply nowhere to run. Six people died in slot canyons in Zion a couple weeks before our trip.

The Narrows is safe and a very popular hike. Just watch the forecast, and if the park service recommends against it then don't go.

That picture of yours looks like the place where that guy was hiking and got his arm stuck and had to chew it off or something like that. You know what I'm talking about?

That was exactly what I thought it was. That picture looked like a shot from "127 Hours." He didn't chew it off, he cut it off with a pocket knife. That movie is something else, man. It is well worth the watch, but that scene is brutal.

While I was in the Marines I wrote my girlfriend that I had been assigned to Quantico. She wrote back wanting to know what kind of ship it was. She has been my wife for 47 years - still no interest in the Marine Corps whatsoever.
