... so CBS posted another one of their anonymous coach surveys.
This year the top-3 officials from the coaches surveyed were:
1. Roger Ayers 2. Mike Eades 3. Teddy Valentine

...and interestingly they were separated by a wide margin from any others mentioned.

Now, I talk a lot about refs in my analysis pieces --- and for good reason --- they are a huge part of any game. And I've maintained on here more than once that Roger is probably the best in the business right now. Teddy is a showboat --- and that doesn't sit well with some coaches --- but he's as good as there is and don't take no sh**. I've said before it's a shame we don't get him very often these days. As for Eades? He has always been a very competent guy but he went through a few years of having what coaches call "rabbit ears" and let himself get taken of his game (especially in some of the more heated ACC environments). As our friend @mikeirbyusa likes to say, he has been our "kryptonite" from time to time, but hey, he did us right in the championship game.

One thing I noticed in the comments was Eades getting criticized for the Natty game. That is an example of the anti-Carolina bias a lot of coaches at other schools have. Did Mike give us a couple of calls that evening? Yes, but they were also clear make-ups for some of that jackwagon Michael Stephens' handiwork. And as far as the number of fouls called in that game? It was physical as all get-out and that stuff needed to be called. I'll criticize and call out zebras when I think it's warranted but I'll also praise them.

BTW: I also so thought it was interesting they attached guys to certain conferences when today they work all over. Again, we just don't see Teddy very often these days.

Thanks gary, I saw this article earlier but was too busy to link it.

I'm a Teddy fan, as a matter of fact I'm a fan of any ref who wont let that hypocrite down the road from us control how the game is called.

And I'm sure you've notice he's never allowed to officiate at HIS, and never a UNC/dook game.

Give me Valentine over any ref in the college game, showboat and all.

Yeah .. I poasted a thread after the NCAAT last year (or the year before .. hard to remember anymore) about officiating and it got dumped/moved into a piss poor officiating bitching thread which defeated the entire purpose of the post.

NCAA officials in all games should be scored by the head coach of each team .. or their designate on a 1-20 scale. Scores should be compiled throughout the season and the merit raises and tourney/game assignments should be based on the higher scores .. ref's should advance just like the teams. And all ref scoring results should be held and made public by accounting firms independent of the NCAA. Millions if not billions of dollars flow via college basketball and it is certainly ripe for and fraught with corruption. jmho

Good idea for scoring refs - they should be held accountable and a higher standard demanded of them.
Also, in relation to the bolded above, you're right, a mountain of money is generated by CBB but you have to wonder how much are the refs being paid? Surely with all the money in the game there could be enough to incentivise mistake free officiating (and by the same token punishing blatant, consistant mistakes)

Ayers is one of the worst I have seen about aiding and abetting underdog "comeback" runs, at least now that Hess the Mess no longer works ACC games. God help any big name team that has a decent lead and the lesser team hit a few quick shots. All of a sudden Rog is on the underdog bandwagon and whistling the frontrunner for every real and imagined infraction while ignoring almost every one committed by the weaker/losing team.

He occasionally calls a mostly even-handed game, which I suppose is all it takes to be called a great ref. I have seen him whistle "makeup" calls when another ref boned it big on the last call. Not really 100% sure how I feel about that, but at least it shows he does understand that BAD CALLS can and do affect games and outcomes.

Eades is horrible where UNC is concerned. I see his name listed to call a UNC game and I just cringe.

Valentine wins points for standing up to Kay, but then he never seems to get to work dook games when they play UNC.

On the few occasions he did dook games in the past, kay could not intimidate Valentine, hence he no longer does dook games.
Could of sworn he was the ref during the ACC Championship game this past season but that can't be.

I like refs that help us win games. Which one of that group is most likely to do that?
All kidding aside, the refs who "help us win games" are the ones calling it straight. That, after all, was the way Dean designed his system.

Anytime they call it straight I like our chances. However, our system doesn't do nearly as well with zebras who turn a blind eye to shenanigans or worse, have their own agendas.

dook, on the other hand........

I have been trying to get people to understand this for a long, long time. Dean (and UNC Family) coach proper, legal defensive tactics. Not slapping/hacking, grabbing, shoving, body bumping, and flopping. When games are called straight and even close to the rules as written, we will get to the FT line more than our opponents, we will out-rebound them as well, and we will win at a very high percentage.
