This is probably a really stupid idea but if it is, I need someone to explain why.

Why not put Trimble and Leaky on their toughest players and play zone with the rest?

For one thing, I'm guessing that would let us use T-Nick more, which could help with scoring. It might also be good for Jalen Washington when he starts getting minutes.

I'm sure we wouldn't want to do it all game long - and probably couldn't since Trimble and Leaky won't always be on the floor together - and it might not be suitable against some foes, but it seems like something we should have in our arsenal.

It is a gimmick that works in a very specific situation. It also works for short stints! I agree that it can shake the other team up for a minute, but it also leaves shooters open and peeps out of position for rebounds. I think with Leaky and Seth as the chasers, it would be effective against teams that didn't have others who shoot well from 3. I want us to concentrate on our defensive rotations and the scramble defenses we already practice though. Our jump D will do the same type of shake up IMO! The team doesn't seem to pick new things up that quickly so far so I wouldn't introduce anything new right now!

Coaches always told me if you play a bunch of different defenses you likely don’t play any well.. man to man is the best D when played properly

In my competitive playing days we always used different defenses to keep the opponent off balance. Typically man after a miss, zone after a bucket and some type of press or scramble after made ft.

When I played, it was a badge of honor if peeps had to resort to this to stop us! I always felt I could beat my man anyhow so I welcomed it. When I coached, it was a pleasure to see because one pick and you have at least 2 shooters open + at least 1 unboxed rebounder opposite!

If you have players who can stick with their man. But what if the guys who can play the best man can't shoot - and vice versa.

We used to use a Diamond and 1 junk D with traps in every corner sometimes to mix it up. But we primarily ran Man (including a few scramble options); occasional zone; and various presses. Once teams get a good look at the Triangle or Box D, it is pretty easy to scheme a way out so they can only be used in surprise short stints!

So . . . a couple of 5-minute stints when Seth and Leaky are in the game together.

I'm thinking Puff at the top of the triangle. His quickness and D should be good enough to foil the most obvious attacks on the T+2.

Maybe T-Nick at the base on one side - because we need someone who can shoot from outside, and playing zone is a way to get him more minutes.

So, yeah, that's my suggested Triangle and 2 lineup

Seth
Leaky
Puff
T-Nick
Armando or Nance - not sure who would be best in this arrangement

Triangle and 2 could also be a way to get Jalen more PT early on.

What coaches call "junk defenses" are very situational as to their effectiveness. In other words, they're only useful applied to certain opponents, as opposed to a regular thing.

Well, Dean Smith would beg to differ with those coaches and that cliche.

What he would say (and I heard him say at a coaching clinic) is that if you teach sound shell principles, then that carries over into whatever multiple defenses you choose to run... and he ran a lot.

Now, as for "junk" defenses, the only one I can recall Dean ever deploying was a "Diamond-and-1" (also the only one I ever used), which is far sounder than the old "Box-and-1", in that D-n-1 entails running solid 1-3-1 responsibilites with a Chaser.
