Anyone ever been there? If so, any suggestions on some cool places to eat and drink or other things?

There is not a really a lot to do but go to the beach

Yeah, it seems very non-commercial, which is what we were kind of looking for. We almost went back to Seacrest but thought this place looked interesting. I know of a few restaurants around there but we will also probably head to Savannah and other places as well. Usually we do a lot of walking so we don't drink and drive and I know this place will be a little different than that as most places are going to be a drive.

Awesome. Thanks. Someone said the Huc-a-poof was a cool little bar but that is all I've got so far.
To be honest, there's not a ton. I don't really remember the names of places (I'm usually blackout when I'm in Savannah and will just end up at Tybee lol). I'll ask my folks tomorrow. They go there a lot. I'll get back to you.

Lyles is right though that there isn't a ton of stuff. There is a couple cool beachside walkup bars I remember.

If you've never been to Savannah, spend at least the bulk of a whole day there. You'll love it. Savannah is an AWESOME city. And yes, Tybee is not commercial at all. I affectionately refer to it as a redneck beach.

Yeah, we plan on at least spending an entire day there. We will be down there 5 days or something like that.

So I take it you've never been to Savannah? Are you staying in Savannah or Tybee? If you're staying in Tybee, take my advice and uber / taxi to Savannah.

Like I said, Savannah is an awesome town. It's easily the most historical place in all of Georgia (it was the very first successful settlement in the state and obviously became an important port). It's also very haunted and has a lot of cool haunted tours, if you're into that sort of thing.

I know y'all go to Nashville a lot. You'll find the vibe of Savannah to be fairly similar to Nashville (country music aside) -- lots of young, vibrant people and personalities, but it's still kinda laid back. Spend your time on River Street and Bay Street and the first few blocks by the river. Savannah is laid out in a grid with grassy squares everywhere that are beautiful to just sit and relax in. You can see the place where the Forrest Gump bench scene was filmed in one of the squares. I don't remember which one, but it's marked with a placard.

And....this is why you'll want to Uber. Parking is problematic like most historical city's downtowns, but THIS is why you'll want to not drive..... no open container laws :D:D

Savannah has no open container laws in its downtown and actively promotes this. Any bar you go to (and there's a TON of bars), they have stacks of clear solo cups sitting by the door, and whenever you go to leave, they'll either say or have a sign that says "don't forget your to-go cup!" and they'll give you one free of charge to pour your drink into. The only rule is that is has to be in a clear, non-glass cup. It's incredibly awesome, even if you're not drinking to get drunk, to walk around leisurely and sight see while you're sipping a cold brew. I have a couple cool stories from Savannah if any of y'all are interested in hearing them.

Yeah, we like to drink on vacation. We like to walk and drink somewhere and actually don't mind walking fairly long distances but obviously not 19 miles, haha. Cab fares were around 44 dollars from Tybee to Savannah (assume the same back) from what we saw. We could swing 88 dollars to have some fun and not worry about driving but that's a lot. There used to be some sort of shuttle but it shut down apparently. I know nothing about Uber rates so may check that out. Sounds pretty awesome though, like just the sort of thing we would enjoy.

I'm into the haunted stuff but not her. She loves old, cool buildings and little shops and stuff like that though. We already planned on spending at least one day there but from the sound of it it may be worth it for us to taxi there in the morning, spend the day there, have some fun that evening, and then taxi back that night.

I will probably drive several nights to different restaurants that seem cool. I assume that I can find some within driving distance. During the day when we are at a beach we tend to just hang around there so the lack of options there won't be a big deal. It is at night when we tend to go out, mainly just to eat and drink though.

I'm always up for a cool story or two though. Doubt anyone viewing a thread such as this would mind so let's hear them.

Uber or Lyft is usually significantly cheaper than a cab.

Yep. As long as you order one at a reasonable time of day or afternoon (anywhere between 8 a.m. and like 7 p.m.), your ride should be no more than $25 tops. Especially your Tybee to Savannah portion.

Furthermore, if you've never used either app, both usually provide a free or discounted first ride.

So I'm bringing this back from the dead because we are heading to Tybee Wednesday. Also, for the Savannah part we just paid for a place there through airbnb so we are taking one day/night and staying in Savannah. That avoids any drinking and driving issues. We'll be in Tybee Wednesday/Thursday then Savannah Friday then back to Tybee Saturday and Sunday night. So if you have any specific advice or places for Savannah that would be cool. We are actually staying a night in Chattanooga on the way back as well, though we know most every place to go there. We love that place.

I was in grad school in Savannah, but that has been 25 years ago, so I doubt I could be much help now. Wife and I went back to visit 20 years ago and not much had changed in the 5 years, but I am sure it is a lot different now.

Tybee never was much on commercialism, which is part of the charm. Pretty laid back, but they had parking meters at all beach accesses, so if they are still there, carry change!

As for food, you can pretty much find anything you want in Savannah. I loved River Street and all bars there used to have a no cover charge, but one drink minimum. When you left, if you weren't done, they put it in a cup and when you went to the next place they would fill it up again. Cops didn't care as long as it was in a cup and not in a glass or can. Food wise, some of the best food I have ever had was there. River House was really good back then and there were others, but I can't remember the names.

Market Square also had tons of good places to eat and drink. It really is a different place than any other I have ever been. Businesses close at 4:00 on Fridays to get the weekend started. Banks stayed open until 6:00 on Thursdays instead of Fridays. Just a different atmosphere.

I would recommend it to anyone and I really want to get back down there soon myself. Enjoy!

Well, a Friday is the night we are staying there so that should be fun. Going to hit the beech until around lunch. Head in and get ready and then go to Savannah, mess around a bit doing something there, check in and then see what the night life is like.

Cool, we may check it out. It depends on how nice though, haha. We are only bringing beach gear so the nicest stuff we have to wear is pretty casual. Khaki shorts and a t-shirt for me.

Mosquitos have been legit. I don't ever get bit back home and got bit a few times last night. Noting a man can't handle though.
