The University of North Carolina finished seventh in the final 2015-16 Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, Carolina’s 19th top-10 finish in the 23-year history of the award and the 17th time the Tar Heels led all Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
The Directors’ Cup measures NCAA post-season competitive success and awards points to a maximum of 10 men’s and 10 women’s programs per school.
UNC compiled 1089.5 points this year, led by men’s and women’s lacrosse, which both earned 100 points as NCAA champions.
Stanford won the competition for the 22nd consecutive year (UNC, which won in 1993-94, is the only other school to win the Division I title) with 1526.5 points. Ohio State, Michigan, Southern California, Florida, UCLA, North Carolina, Virginia, Texas and Oregon round out the top 10.
The Tar Heels finished one point ahead of Virginia for seventh overall and first in the ACC. This is the second straight year UNC has led all ACC schools, and the first time UNC has done that in consecutive years since a four-year run from 2006-09. UNC has led the ACC 17 times – no other school has led the ACC more than three times.
This is UNC’s second top-10 finish in as many years and the seventh top-10 performance in the last eight years. UNC is fourth all-time with 19 top-10s behind only Stanford (23), Florida (23) and UCLA (21). All other ACC schools have combined for 18 top-10 finishes (while members of the conference).
In addition to NCAA titles by men’s and women’s lacrosse, the Tar Heels had second-place finishes in men’s basketball and field hockey, fifth place by men’s tennis and ninth-place by men’s soccer and women’s tennis. Five other sports – football, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving and volleyball – finished in the top 20.
Men’s swimming and diving, wrestling, men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s fencing, women’s cross country, softball and men’s golf also contributed points towards UNC’s total this season.
Carolina, Virginia and Notre Dame (17) represent the ACC in the top 20 this year. Other ACC finishes include: Syracuse (21), Florida State (22), Duke (24), Louisville (29), NC State (32), Virginia Tech (38), Miami (40), Clemson (42), Boston College (48), Wake Forest (68), Georgia Tech (80) and Pitt (110).
