TAR HEELS CLAIM 21ST TOP-10 FINISH IN THE LEARFIELD IMG COLLEGE DIRECTORS’ CUP
CHAPEL HILL – A national championship in field hockey, an NCAA runner-up finish in women’s soccer and a trio of third-place ties led the University of North Carolina to 10th place in the final 2018-19 Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup standings.
It’s the 21st time in 26 years of the Directors’ Cup the Tar Heels have finished in the top 10. Carolina amassed 987 points, 0.17 points ahead of LSU and one point ahead of Ohio State.
Stanford won the title for the 25th straight year (UNC won the inaugural Cup in 1994) with 1567.75 points.
Michigan was second, 295 points behind the Cardinal. Florida, Texas, Southern California, UCLA, Florida State, Virginia, Duke and UNC round out the top 10.
Carolina has the fourth-most top-10s in the history of the Directors’ Cup. Only Stanford (26), Florida (26) and UCLA (23) have more than UNC’s 21. Virginia is next among ACC schools with eight. This is the third time four ACC schools finished in the top 10 (also 2010 and 2011).
The Directors’ Cup awards points based on NCAA postseason success. Each school may accumulate points towards the Cup standings in 19 sports – four of which much be baseball, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.
Tar Heel teams had one first, a second, three thirds, two ninths, three 17ths, two 19ths and one 20th-place NCAA postseason finish this season.
Carolina field hockey went 23-0 to win the national championship and bring 100 points towards the school’s total. Women’s soccer added 90 points from its second-place finish in the College Cup and women’s lacrosse, men’s tennis and women’s tennis each added 83 points after advancing to their respective national semifinals.
Baseball and men’s basketball tied for ninth; men’s soccer, softball and women’s outdoor track and field tied for 17th; men’s golf and wrestling were 19th; and men’s and women’s fencing were 20th.
