Carolina 38, Georgia Tech 21
• North Carolina rallied from 21 points down to score a 38-31 victory and beat Georgia Tech in Atlanta for the first time since 1997. The win snapped an eight game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.
• The Tar Heels improved to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It is just the second time in the last 15 years that Carolina has started 1-0 in conference play. Carolina is 4-1 for the first time since 2011.
• This 21-point rally was the largest comeback in Carolina history. The previous was 17 at Georgia Tech in 1987 (trailed 20-3 at the half before winning, 30-23) and vs. Virginia in 1997 (trailed 20-3 in the second quarter before rallying for 48-20 victory).
• Quarterback Marquise Williams rushed for a career-high 148 yards and scored two touchdowns. His previous high was 132 last year at Notre Dame. Williams also caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Quinshad Davis. It was Williams’ third career touchdown reception and all three have come from Davis.
• Williams has now accounted for 69 career touchdowns, which ranks second all-time at UNC and is 10 shy of the school record of 79 set by Darian Durant. Williams has 43 touchdowns passing and 26 rushing. He scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter with four seconds remaining to close the margin to 21-14, and then scored what proved to be the winning touchdown with a 27-yard run in the fourth quarter.
• WR Quinshad Davis has completed all four pass attempts of his career for touchdowns. He threw a 32-yard scoring pass to T.J. Thorpe vs. East Carolina in 2013, and connected with Williams on a 29-yarder vs. Virginia in 2013, a 23-yarder to Williams at Notre Dame in 2014 and today’s 37-yarder to Williams.
• Carolina rushed for 231 yards and averaged 7.5 yards per carry. The Tar Heels have now rushed for 200-or-more yards in four of the five games this season.
• Elijah Hood rushed for 60 yards and scored a pair of short touchdowns. It is the second time this season he has scored two rushing touchdowns. He also did it against North Carolina A&T.
• Carolina scored two touchdowns in the last 1:29 of the first half to draw within seven at halftime. Elijah Hood scored on a 2-yard run with 1:29 remaining and after a Georgia Tech punt, Williams scored on a 7-yard keeper. On the first drive of the second half, Nick Weiler made a 37-yard field goal at the 12:35 mark of the third quarter. The Tar Heels scored three times in three minutes, 54 seconds.
• DE Junior Gnonkonde, who played high school football at Lanier County in Lakeland, Ga., returned a fumble 20 yards early in the fourth quarter to turn the momentum in Carolina’s favor. It was his first career fumble recovery and return.
• After allowing 204 rushing yards in the first half, Carolina limited Georgia Tech to just 51 in the second half.
• Linebacker Cayson Collins made his first start of the season and responded with a career-high 10 tackles. His previous high was nine last season vs. Pitt.
