ESPN college football analyst Danny Kanell picked UNC as his national sleeper team during a broadcast of “Championship Drive” on Tuesday afternoon.
The former Florida State quarterback got some push back from Kevin Carter, but the idea of UNC being a sleeper wasn’t criticized by anyone else on the panel.
“They play two FCS programs, they play Florida State, which is basically their toughest game on the slate, in Tallahassee,” Kanell said. “Other than that, this is a team that was second in the ACC last year in offense, they’re going to be better at quarterback with Mitch Trubisky. They’re awful on defense, so much that, ‘Hey, they have to get somewhat better.’”
Kevin Carter right away brought up the two FCS teams being on the schedule asking if Kanell will be okay with having a team in the playoff with two FCS teams on the schedule. (You knew this was coming).
David Pollack noted, “They play Georgia in the Dome.”
Kanell: “They play at Georgia and Florida State. If they beat them then you overlook it.”
Pollock then noted “They could play Clemson, too.”
Joe Tessitore: “They’ve got a ton of talent on offense, a ton of talent. And at least it’s year two with Chizik’s system on defense. But you could see them getting there to the ACC championship game and rolling the dice and see what happens.”
Then, a few of the panelists brought up last December and the onside kick.
The highlights shown while the panel was talking UNC were two running plays by Elijah Hood vs. Clemson and then South Carolina, an interception versus N.C. State on a ball batted at the line of scrimmage by Jeremiah Clarke, and the long TD pass from Marquise Williams to Ryan Switzer in the win at Pittsburgh.
