UNC Names Chip Lindsey Its New Offensive Coordinator

ALSO

In addition to the hires of new offensive coordinator and QBs coach Chip Lindsey and offensive line coach Randy Clements, Coach Brown has added pass game coordinator to Lonnie Galloway’s title and run game coordinator to John Lilly’s title.

“Coach Galloway and Coach Lilly have done amazing jobs for our program. Each one has excelled in their areas of responsibility and they are key assets to the success of our program. I’m very appreciative of their hard work, and as a result, they’ve earned these additions to their titles and job descriptions.”

At least they didn't go with some throwback. But, this looks like a punt. I don't expect the offense to be as good next season. And, without a highly potent offense, UNC loses a lot more games.

One big problem I have is what Orlando Sentinel says about this departure:
"Although Lindsey served as the offensive coordinator at UCF, Malzahn called the plays. It’s expected that Lindsey will handle the play-calling at UNC"

So how much of the game prep, scheming, qb-coaching, in-game offensive adjustments etc fell to Malzahn?

This definitely feels like a hire that was made after multiple people turned us down.
Definitely! No way in hell was this guy high on the list. It seems to be a recurring theme that the established personnel stay away from UNC. I just don't know why. They will languish in the middle for as long as it lasts.

Sounds like a good hire
Does it? Sounds like the first one that didn't say "No thanks" to me. Where are the stats to back this guy up as a proven coach that can maintain the 35-55 points needed, every game, for UNC to have a chance to win games?

I guess he'll have to create those stats on the job in CH. Good luck to him. I'll continue to expect 6-6, at best.

I'm guessing the reason is no one wants to coach on a team with the other coaches we have, including the defense. Maybe the other guys told Mack why they passed and he realizes he has to change. Doubt it, though. Most head coaches, especially ones that have been successful at some point, won't listen to others.

ETA: I look forward to woad replying to my post saying something about Mack hiring bad position coaches, being old and/or Bly being the reason.

I hear people predicting that the MB 2.0 experiment will leave the program worse than when it arrived. I dunno if that is the case. But, I doubt it gets raised much. People keep emphasizing how MB got NC high school coaches to "like UNC" again. Okay... well... it's not like they were unaware of UNC and its role in the state's athletics prowess. Once Brown leaves, someone has to keep it up.

My point is; It's up to every new coach to appeal to the state's HS coaches. Mack Brown is well past his prime and his stubbornness is a hefty price to pay. SO, you trade one drawback for a 3 others. These nostalgia hires look weak to me. Brown was NEVER any kind of long-term hire. After Maye leaves, they'll have to start all over again. As bad as Longo was beyond the 20, he created a lot of points and we got the 2 best QBs we ever had. He left a loaded team with a Heisman-level QB.

Longo averaged a good amount calling about 4 plays. I don't expect a lot to change with Lilly and Galloway having been in the system for multiple years and being heavily involved in the game planning.

Not nearly as much. But Malzahn was , like Mike Leach, a guy who preferred to call the plays on offense.

You have summed why I was fine with Longo. And of course, I fear that Mack is the type who will think he should be HC when he is 80 and older. Either the big money people get a handle on him soon, or his ego could take the program well back down. 73 year old coaches who haven't won truly big in nearly 20 years simply do not keep recruiting well, nor can they hire and keep the best assistant coaches. The longer Mack 2.0 lasts, the more likely its end will be ugly.

Mack 2.0

Searels (bad hire)
Bateman (parted ways prematurely)
John Lilly (arguably an upgrade)
Billy High (huge loss)
Jack Bicknell (lasted one year)
Chizik (bad hire)
Phil Longo (lived up to his reputation)

Randy Clements
Chip Lindsey

I would put a TBD on Chizik and Warren. Supposedly there were some attitude issues on D and some of that problem hit the portal. If they modify their approach in the off-season and the attitudes are better then there could be some improvement there. We'll know after a couple of games.
