With UNC having already allowed 3 safeties this season my friend and colleague Brett Friedlander of the North State Journal did some research this week on teams that allowed the most safeties in a season. Here is what he sent me, which likely is also posted on the site he now works for:
After a couple of days of frustrating research and pull out what hair I have left, I have finally gotten some info about how UNC's three safeties allowed this season ranks in relation to the NCAA record book. ....
The short answer is nobody knows. Safeties allowed aren't an official stat. However, thanks to the efforts of Chris Radford of the NCAA's research department, we do at least have stats back as far as 2000. And the results are pretty interesting, especially in relation to UNC. Turns out the Tar Heels have led the nation in safeties allowed three times in the last 15 years. Here's the list of seasonal leaders:
2015 – Tulane (3); Virginia (3)
2014 – North Carolina (3)
2013 – six teams had 2
2012 – North Carolina St. (3); West Virginia (3)
2011 – 7 teams with 2
2010 – North Carolina (3); Vanderbilt (3)
2009 – Four teams with 3
2008 – Troy (3)
2007 – North Texas (4)
2006 – 8 teams with 2
2005 – Nebraska, Kansas, Miami (OH) with 3
2004 – 9 teams with 2
2003 – Washington St. (4)
2002 – Four teams with 3
2001 – North Carolina (4)
2000 – Florida (3); Vanderbilt (3)
